Having just emerged from the second lockdown we (myself and the wife) were lucky enough to be able to get away for a couple of nights and decided on the Royal George in Appledore, so glad we did as we had a wonderful stay and cannot recommend it enough! We stayed for two nights in the attic room, which was very comfortable and had all the features you would expect. The bed on the firmer side but very comfortable. The shower had great pressure (albeit a little snug) and the bath was nice and roomy (and fills quickly). The room was well heated and got up to temperature very quickly. Plenty of towels (and decent size) which is always welcome. The room was clean and well equipped. Only niggle would be to have some comfier seats. The Royal George was very well organised with COVID measures and the staff were very extremely friendly and catered for all our needs during our two day stay. We used the restaurant for our evening meals as well as breakfast. We at the following which were all awesome (especially the fish and chips!) Pictured: Smoked Venison Shoulder Scotch Egg, Brown Sauce, Capers & Coriander Beer Battered Local Fish, Hand-Cut Chips, Mushy Peas, Curry Sauce Buttered and Roasted Turkey Breast, Roast Potatoes, Parsnips, Carrots, Sprouts, Sage, Cranberry Stuffing Braised Ox Cheek, Cheddar Mash, Roasted Carrot, Kale, Pickled Onion Ring and Parmesan Carrot Cake Cheesecake, Brandy Snap, Cinnamon Ice Cream Sticky Toffee Pudding, Butterscotch Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream & Pecans Chocolate Fondant, Chocolate Crumble, Honeycomb, Pistachios, Caramel Ice Cream Breakfasts Full English and trout and scrambled eggs In summary, a very comfortable stay with excellent food and a great team running the Royal George. You will not be disappointed.

Myself and my family came here for a roast dinner over the weekend. We were greeted kindly at the door, the staff were very friendly. Our waitress gave faultless service and chatty/friendly which was lovely! I have heard amazing things about the food at the George, I have been waiting to get here for a roast well over a year, after finally being able to make it, my partner and I was highly disappointed. The cauliflower cheese was very hard. Definitely not parboiled/blanched beforehand. The potatoes were not boiled long enough before roasting and were definitely reheated poorly when serving as inside and out dry with no crisp, no flavour/herbs nor salt. Gravy was thin and lacked in flavour. The horseradish I'd have hopes to be homemade but seemed to be Coleman whipped into cream... The meat was definitely cooked beautifully for us both but whole dish was served tepid so 5 mins in...cold. My daughter had mac and cheese which was also lack luster. I understand some children wouldn't be too fussed but our little one only had a few mouthfuls because it was quite literally pasta with sauce for her whole dinner. It was gutting as she's a foodie and she got a bit of a telling off when leaving her dinner but on a taste test, I can understand why. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious, caramelised hazelnuts and ice cream a perfect combination of texture and flavour. A definitive hit for little one. I hope the staff know that they done a fantastic job. The actual location, beautiful decor and view was great. But as for a keen food reviewer, it's important to be honest. Especially after hearing so many fantastic things.

Terrible breakfast. Would not stay here again due to breakfast. Would not recommend. Also states it is air conditioned but only if they bring in a mobile air conditioning unit which is too loud to sleep with if on. |They only had sourdough dough bread (with everything). Asked for usual white/brown bread? But no. No muffins or rolls. Told they didn't buy it as it goes of to quick as not enough demand. Offered only Gluten free which is awful.|No continental breakfast offered, menu stated an extra £6 for yogurt and granola. Extra if you wanted a glass of orange juice. |When she bought the milk for the tea she said "is that enough were running short".|I have never stayed anywhere you |are expected to pay extra for a glass of orange. No croissants, nothing. |They served us streaky bacon and said they recently changed it as people complained they didn't like bac bacon. Joke they swap a superior product for an inferior product because people requested something cheaper? Less stasty? I have my doubts. Cheaper for them maybe. |Really poor. I'm afraid I can only give a low rating as this really ruined my stay away which was a special treat for my Mum. |I paid a lot to stay here and this service and lack of choice was awful. |Scrambled egg under cooked but...
