We recently stayed at the hotel and made use of the bar and restaurant. We really enjoyed our stay, the room, twin bed with level access bathroom. We travelled by train, using assisted travel, arriving at Wakefield Westgate, then a taxi to the hotel. On arrival we received a warm and friendly welcome. Our room was warm, comfortable and exceptionally clean. The level access bathroom was superb, a very powerful shower, a good range of grab rails, I do think it does need one between the toilet and sink. There is a boxed unit from the floor up to the height of the sink, having no grab rail on the left there as well as the fold away toilet rail type on the right side is a bit of a struggle. Both the shower and sink have press dispensers, the shower one is filled with body and hair shampoo, the sink has liquid soap, neither are messy and always filled. A short distance to the restaurant and bar, again we received a warm and friendly welcome from the staff. Food was excellent, delicious and well presented, very reasonably priced, a good choice throughout the menu; without it being overwhelming. The portions are very generous. The restaurant can and does get busy, the team of staff are to be applauded for their attention, friendly approach, professionalism, all working as a team and no matter how busy the restaurant is the staff never seem phased, the service is of the highest standard. We had breakfast included in our 5 day stay at the hotel. A warm and cheery welcome from the breakfast host, directs you to the continental self service area, once settled at your table you can place your order from the varied breakfast menu. The choice and variety is amazing, exceptional value and delicious. There were three events in the marquee over the weekend, a birthday, a wedding and a christening. As a guest of the hotel and using the restaurant for our evening meal you would not have known there were celebrations going on, the restaurant maintains the same high standard of service. We were very pleasantly surprised that any noise from the celebrations isn’t heard within our room. In the morning the caretaker and garden staff are preparing the grounds and play area for a new day of welcoming visitors, everywhere is well maintained, again, you would not have known there was an event the night before, everything was ready for the day ahead. The team of housekeeping and cleaning staff do a magnificent job of keeping everything fresh and exceptionally clean. The pub and hotel is situated within a large wooded area and grounds, perfect for a pleasant stroll or walking the dog(s) We used Taxis for getting around, to visit Wakefield museum, the arts house and Wakefield cathedral. We also visited the Yorkshire sculpture park. We were very grateful to our taxi driver who went out of his way to accommodate us getting there and back. Thank you to all the staff at The Holmfield Arms and hotel for looking...
Read moreI have been on many occasions to this pub and service and food has been ok, but on this occasion (23/4) the food and service was terrible. I ordered the salmon with veg, which came over cooked with sloppy asparagus. My sister had chicken dinner (after being told that there was no chicken supreme) and the vegetables were inedible (I think the carrots had been boiled for 3 weeks and the broccoli was rock hard) and the chicken had lumps of fat within the meat (??). My mum is 90, so we asked if there was a childrens menu, as the adult meals were too large, which they gave us, but failed to tell us that there was a smaller meal range for the over 60's, which we found on leaving! The young waitress was very nice(which, along with the decor is why they managed to scrape 1 star), but once served, we waited for a a ridiculous amount of time to catch anyone's attention, having to go up and ask each time for drinks and the dessert menu (which then took another 20 minutes to arrive!) Once we ordered dessert, I again had to go up to the lady in charge to say that I think that our order may have been forgotten, which she promptly went into the kitchen and sent a young waitress out to tell us nervously that our desserts would be with us shortly. They arrived 2 minutes later, and my rhubarb crumble was inedible, with no rhubarb below, just bubbled away and turned into a hard sticky substance up the side of the bowl (photographed). We arrived at 4:30, and it was very quiet. I am no fine diner, but I can honestly say that I have never been so disappointed with a meal or service. The lady in charge of the waitresses seemed uninterested, walking away from tables after she had served them, with her head down avoiding contact with customers, and at no point whilst she stood folding napkins or wiping the cutlery did she look up and around the tables to see how things were running. We saw glasses being handed back because they were dirty (with no apology from the lady in charge), a man say to his wife on the table across 'I'm not eating that' and 2 other people complain about their food. Maybe it was a temporary chef?, but it was the utter contempt by the lady in charge with how she dealt with peoples complaints. We went to celebrate my late fathers birthday, and will never visit this restaurant again, even though I live just around the corner....

After many attempts at joining the cloud system (due to the hotel being in a signal blackspot) I retrieved my booking, showed this to the receptionist to then be issued with the meal voucher for my stay with no apology for her abrupt tone. I went into the bar then rudely told to stand to the other side of the bar as this wasn't open. After joining a queue I was served by a lovely cheerful member of staff who talked through what drinks were available. I ordered a drink, then proceeded to order my food. Just as I was attempting to place my food order the duty manager honed in, pushed the member of staff off the till sighting the till she was using had malfunctioned. After standing a further 5 minutes whilst she entered a large order I eventually tendered my meal choice along with the other 2 diners in my company. The food arrived 90 mins later, admittedly the food was quite nice. The following day we decided rather than dining here we would eat out and take a night cap before bed, we arrived back at the venue at 22:38 and refused any drinks as it 'wasn't busy'. I explained I was entertaining clients and would like one drink each. The duty manager told me to complain to the hotel manager on reception if 'I liked'. I proceeded to reception naturally very disgruntled and embarrassed to find the duty manager giving her version of events. I initiated a complaint to the hotel manager who was quite frankly, opinionated, obnoxious and unprofessional. We suggested the hotel was advertising a service it was failing to maintain and that the cost cutting measures were totally out of order and probably against the pubs licensing conditions. I was accused of being rude after challenging this particular manager, we were then told we would be served but in the garden as the bar needed to be cleaned. I flatly refused and opted to make a formal complaint. £1231 per guest per week x 3 and this was the treatment. Never again. Breakfast service was friendly, professional and efficient, credit...
