They are lucky to receive 1 star and only did because I can't leave a 0 star rating. I went for lunch today to celebrate my friends birthday and we understood this would be a nice place to visit. After checking with the bar staff that cocktails were 241, I ordered food from the set menu (£12.95) and two cocktails. The bill came to almost £30! As it was my friends birthday and I didn't want to complain, I simply paid it and thought I would put it down to experience. My starter and main course arrived before my friend and her daughters food (who had travelled from Bristol for this 'special occasion') so I had to eat alone. The food was ok, nothing special - very over priced for what it was. We had to wait and wait for my friends starters to arrive even chasing staff when they rushed past our table - when they did, they were cold, so inedible. After an hour of waiting for the main course, we asked a member of staff where the food was and she said it was being plated up. This was a lie as we had to wait again for the food to arrive. Again, this was inedible as it was cold. We sent back the steak sandwich to a member of staff who looked like we were a real inconvenience to him as it was so cold - this was re heated and sent back to the table. We waited half an hour after my friends had pushed the food around their plates waiting forr a staff member to clear the table so we could complain, but no one materialised. We eventually left, disappointed and very upset at the sheer lack of customer care, terrible service, over priced cold food and over priced cocktails (I've tasted better). I will never visit this establishment again and certainly after this experience, will not be recommending it to anyone! Thank you Corner House, for completely ruining a special get together and my friends birthday. Had any of your staff bothered with us during our two hour visit, this could have been dealt with - unfortunately that was not to be and so I have to report my experience as it was - not enjoyable at all. If you are thinking of visiting here, don't! Avoid, there are MUCH better places around in Cardiff who do care about their food and...
Read moreA paragon of abject disappointment. It looked nice enough and had some pretty reasonable reviews but the service and food were both absolutely shocking.
It started pleasantly enough until we were seated for our booking and one of my table requested a gin and tonic with no lemon or lime. He has a citrus allergy. Admittedly it's not a major thing, just an irritating skin condition but still, he was understandably very clear when ordering as he always is. So, when his drink was delivered with both lemon and lime garnishes floating within it, of course he reminded our waiter that he had asked for it with no lemon or lime. The waiter assured him that the drink would be remade, but instead they removed the lemon and lime slices and poured the remaining lemon/lime infused g&t into a new glass. Of course, he noticed fairly quickly and we were forced to discuss his citrus allergy in order to obtain what he had very clearly originally requested.
I ordered the veal ravioli and when it arrived it was all clumped together, shrivelled and chewy like as if it had been made at the start of the week, thrown in the fridge and then thrown in the microwave... Seriously, when I stuck a fork in it to raise a piece of ravioli from the plate the entire dish lifted from the placemat. I asked the waiter if it was made fresh and was told that it had been made that morning. He asked the chef to check and they said that they weren't happy with the batch and took option off the menu - but somehow he'd been happy enough to try to serve it in the first place.
Someone else ordered the waygu burger and although the bun was very reasonable in size the burger patty was roughly double the diameter of a 20p piece, and somehow simultaneously both overdone and cold.
Someone else ordered the lobster & crab fishcakes and when they appeared they were cold.
Altogether, having heard such good things about the place, seen the decor and felt the general ambiance, all of which are great, I don't think that I have been so thoroughly disappointed by the failures in service, drinks or food standards than I have been at any time or...
Read moreWhen we arrived we were seated adjacent to a group of about 15 very loud men, knocking back tequilas. The food was clearly secondary to them. It was very intimidating... When it came to ordering we were informed there were no pizzas, no steak pie, no scallops. This continued with the dessert menu, only half of which was available. We should have been told that they were only serving a limited menu before sitting down. This apparently was due to 'supplier issues'. As it stands we would have run away, given the outcome of the food we were served. The fried squid was tiny and cold, the baked mushrooms consisted of what looked like 3 week old shrivelled mushrooms in a tasteless gloop. The prawns were utterly disgusting, served in some sort of processed tomato sauce. The chicken strip things were coated in some sort of vile packet bbq sauce. The accompanying bread was stale and the luxury fries, were standard fries with about 3 shavings of parmesan. Inedible. The substitute chicken pie was some sort of caterpack special and the linguine over spiced and lacking flavour. The wine was overpriced My son's burger was average. The sticky toffee pudding and ice cream was however very nice But, again, all the puddings resembled and tasted a bit like preprepared cater packs. All for the grand total of nearly 200 pounds for 5 people. We were not given the chance to tip, it was added on for us. I find this rude. The final insult was the toilets. These are situated up some scary precarious high steps. When you get to the top you then have to walk all the way down a long corridor before accessing the loos. If you suffer from vertigo, you'll have to just cross your legs together! We were so disappointed and a little angry at feeling cheated out of so much money. Service was however very good. The only good thing. Don't...
