Madhav's has two sections to it, one area which is a south asian restaurant and the other area a asian grocery store, which has a good variety of asian food(frozen, packed & fresh) stocked but the store itself could be a lot tidier/ organised.
Price wise, there are many items which are overpriced but others can be a bargain so its definitely worth looking around.
The store it situated on a busy road near a small roundabout, in a residential area so it can be difficult at times to stop and shop if driving but walk in is fine.
There is a small customer toilet in-store which is fairly clean but due to the size and stockroom which is near the toilet, i wouldn't recommended it to disabled people with a wheelchair.
During our past few visits we've noticed the lady owner who usually cooks and runs the restaurant side of the business, to come across as rude and unwelcoming. On one occasion she refused to cook the food we wanted to ordered due to one of her workers were on break?! she told us she didn't want to cook/ prepare the food and if we wanted we could wait for about 30 minutes when her worker should be back, and he'll cook it for us. Even though the restaurant was open and there was nothing to state otherwise. We were quite surprised with the appalling service and the manner of which she spoke to a potential customer, so we decided to leave and eat elsewhere having hungry...
Read moreIf your dietary leanings are directed toward India and other countries in the Middle and Far East, then this is just the shop for you. You can buy anything from a box of sesame crackers to a whole sack of Basmati rice, from a slice of pumpkin or other squashes to a bags of green chiles, fiery red Scotch Bonnet chiles, and all of the 12 spices you need to make your own curry. There’s dried fruit in small bags and in bulk, there’s dozens of kinds of dried beans, there’s fresh spinach, coriander 🌿etc; in fact, there’s so much, so many ingredients, some familiar, many not so, but just ask Mrs Madhav and she’ll tell you what it is and how to cook it. Nothing is too much trouble for her and her husband, who, if you ask for something, won’t direct you to it, he’ll bring it you! Madhav has been there for many years, serving a very international community, both with its shop and in it’s reasonably priced attached restaurant with great grub, from Indian street food to almost gourmet dining without the tiny portions and silly frills and stupid prices you’ll find in supposedly 5* establishments. Not the most attractive of shops, but don’t let appearances fool you. It’s ethnic and authentic. There’s nearby street parking and a bus stop virtually outside the door. They don’t, of course, sell alcohol or cigarettes, but there’s a shop next door that does. Highly...
Read moreGreat shop. Been trying to buy a number of ingredients for indian recipes for a while and unable to find many of them in the supermarkets. Managed to get everything I need in here such as Panch Poran, chaat masala, tamarind concentrate, kashmiri chilli spice, ajwain and amchoor as well as various flours, rice and a number of other ingredients. Some prices do seem a little steep but overall I was happy with the cost. Had to drive from the Vale of Glamorgan as there are no shops of this kind here but will happily go back again.
4 stars as business seemed to pick up when I was in there and there just didn't seem to be a real queue system. It is only a modest sized shop though so it's not a huge deal. I think the issue was more the indecisive customers rather than the shop itself.
Card payments are accepted. There is restricted parking in close proximity (pay attention to the signs).
I haven't got time to post a list of prices sorry. I filled a basket (and it was.completely full) with a couple of types of flour, numerous spices and dried chillies and other items and paid no more than £25.
I'm very pleased I...
