Surprisingly well done wee museum with very knowledgeable and loyal staff. Going in at the start, I was expecting a little museum with lots of information posted on the walls with pictures and maybe a film or two. Instead, we found displays with lots of interesting things and information from the Napoleonic Period up to the present.
They have an incident room with alternating exhibits from weapons, uniforms, instruments, masks, etc. On our visit it was helmets and armour from the early middle ages to present. Very interesting and informative with samples of the different helmets you can hold and try on! I was surprised how heavy the archer’s helmets were in the 1400s and how light the real Pith helmets were. The modern helmets were originally modelled after the archer’s helmet.
There were so many things to see and learn about that we we a bit sad that we saved the Firing Line for last. Probably, it would be better to visit first or after a wee afternoon tea. You can easily view the Roman Wall and huge wood carving at...
Read moreBeing a former member of the US Army's 2nd Cavalry Regiment (then known as the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment), I found the long and proud history of the Welsh soldier from the 17th Century to the present to be amazing. Interacting with the staff at the museum and asking questions made the experience even more enjoyable.
The museum has many artifacts from the various periods of service the Welsh have provided to King and Country. Also, it has many activities for children to learn through hands on exhibits and fun things to do during the visit.
I will return over and over again, as I have only scratched the surface of the Honor and Sacrifice of the Welsh in service to the UK and Wales.
I recommend this museum to not only the public, but any Veteran or currently serving military member, as many lessons can be learned from the...
Read moreThis museum, which is still relatively new, tells the tale of two Welsh regiments. Entry is included with Castle admission, so depending on whether you visit the other attractions included in the ticket, it's either "free" or extremely expensive. There is a fair amount of interactivity, including the opportunity to try on vintage uniforms and, at the time of my visit, some polite and knowledgable staff members had a number of antique firearms on display from their handling collection.
The drawback is that captions are frequently challenging to read (I know light levels are low to preserve artefacts but there are ways to do this). There isn't really much in here, and what there is frequently seems second-class, despite coming from the collections of several...
