I checked out dog friendly places to visit in Brecon, the cathedral being one. I was delighted that this lovely little coffee shop was also dog friendly. I looked at their menu online and thought great I'll have lunch there. It was late Sunday morning, almost noon. I gingerly opened the door, due to me not being the most confident of people. Especially on unknown territory. There appeared to be a nice little bookshop on the right hand side. However, I didn't get the chance to take a look. I looked to see if I could find someone to check if dogs were allowed inside or whether it was only outside. I was informed that there were a few tables indoors where I could sit or outside. I asked about ordering and was told in quite a sharp manner that it was table service only. Me and my dog took a seat outside and the young girl who originally spoke quite sharp to me brought me the menu. I must say that the menu had a great selection on offer. When the young girl came back she asked if I was ready to order. I started to say that I would like a sandwich and a coffee then I practically got my head bitten off. The young girl stated that they don't do sandwiches on a Sunday just Sunday lunch or I could have cake. Surely it would have only taken a few minutes to prepare me a sandwich, after all there was only one other customer eating. I decided not to have a coffee there and headed down into the town. There I found a lovely dog friendly coffee shop with a great selection of cakes, sandwiches etc. The staff were friendly and welcoming to me and my dog and made her a lovely puppacino. I had a lovely mug of coffee. Of course, it was coffee#1 5*
Maybe I just went to The Hours Cafe & Bookshop on a bad day.
Please don't let this put you off visiting the beautiful Cathedral and grounds, which are very...
Read moreCome here all the time being a Brecon local. Friendly staff, a reasonable variety of foods and cakes (could do with a bit more0 but the feather in the cap is the location. Being set in the curtilage of beautiful Brecon Cathedral the setting is sublimely gorgeous, green, peaceful, historic and lowers your heartbeat by about forty beats. Apart from the tea and cakes you can walk inside this stunning cathedral and even see the historic military chapel and view the iconic colours of the South Wales Borderers that were involved in the Zulu wars.* There is also a lovely little shop and toilets on site. *The 24th Regiment - South Wales Borderers - established their Regimental Depot in Brecon in 1873 and the Havard Chapel in Brecon Cathedral was dedicated as the Regimental Chapel in 1922. In 1934, the famous Colours carried by the Regiment during the 1879 Zulu War were deposited in the Chapel. The Queen's Colour 1/24th was saved by Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill after the disaster at Isandhlwana. Both officers, who were killed by the Zulus, were each later awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. These particular Colours, because of their significance, were encased in 2002 to prevent further...
Read moreRude staff member. When I said the truth the management claim I’m being sexiest and ageist ( not true). Maybe I was too direct, that is fair feedback to me. The truth is that the person was so abrupt with me, that they upset me quite a lot, which is not a pleasant experience when paying for a meal and a nice space. Their harshness probably led me to be too harsh with my original review. I have taken that feedback from them and edited my review, but in fairness the original bad feeling came from that staff member, not me. I think that person also needs to own their abrupt nature, and as I can be abrupt to people who are abrupt with me (but not people who aren’t), I suppose I could learn to be more constructive in those situations, but it’s difficult when someone is so abrupt in the first instance. That jarring feeling can be hard...
