There are restaurants that feed you, and then there are restaurants that seduce you. Zara Mangal in Watford is gloriously guilty of the latter. It’s a place where the smoke from the grill hangs in the air like an unspoken promise, and where you quickly realise that your only real regret will be not having a second stomach, or a larger table.
The service is the kind you don’t get enough of these days. Smooth without being showy, warm without the synthetic edge of scripted friendliness.
The waitresses glide between tables with confidence and polish, as stylish as the plates they serve. They know exactly when to appear, when to retreat, and how to make you feel as if you’re the most important diner in Hertfordshire.
As for the food, magnificent. The salad alone would make lesser establishments blush. It was bright, crisp, generous, the sort that makes you reconsider what a humble pile of leaves can achieve in the right hands and the superpowers of sumac. My only critique; they don't need to serve the lemon wedges, it's already perfect, why would I interrupt the harmonious balance created by the maestro in the kitchen?
Our main platter arrived like a chorus line of temptation, each element perfectly judged, each bite making the next inevitable. Everything from the grill sang with that deep, smoky swagger that separates the good from the unforgettable. Nothing was spicy, but everything was spiced well. To elevate this the home made chilli sauce could pack more of a punch and a touch more tang. But this is like criticising Lionel Messi for only winning one world cup.
My only other lament, the tables are a tad too compact for such ambition. This is food that demands space and time. We left wishing we could have stayed longer, eaten more, surrendered completely.
But perhaps that’s the mark of a truly memorable restaurant: it leaves you wanting just one more bite, one more hour, one more sip of something wonderful. Zara Mangal does...

The staff are very friendly, have a good sense of humour and genuinely make you feel welcome. If you need more sauce, more bread or an extra napkin, not a problem! It’s been a long time since I’ve heard the phrase ‘Lovely Jubbly’, instantly setting a homely feel 😁
Ok, the important bit, the food. Oh the food! I’ve become a big fan of Turkish food recently and this did not disappoint. From the first little plate of hummus and dips that left my mouth watering so much I swear I dribbled to the MAHOOSIVE special mixed main that I swear doubled in size with every delicious mouthful, I wasn’t left wanting! Our party had a variety of dishes, each as succulent as the other.
The satisfaction was as high as the prices were low, surprisingly for the exceptional quality of the food.
Do yourself a favour, don’t walk on by. Stop in and tuck in, just don’t have any follow on plans as you’ll absolutely need to find a comfortable spot to enjoy a considerable food coma afterwards.

The food is the real highlight: perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented. Their mixed grill platter is a must-try, featuring tender lamb chops, juicy chicken, and flavorful kebabs cooked to perfection over the charcoal grill. The mezze selection is equally delightful, with fresh hummus, baba ghanoush, and vibrant salads that burst with authentic flavors. Don’t skip the baklava for dessert – it’s a sweet, flaky masterpiece.
