UPDATE: went again recently with a friend who has a severe gluten allergy and 1921 accommodated this amazingly. We all had the tasting menu, but her dishes were brought out on their own plates and everything explained including substitutions. They freshly baked a tiny loaf of gluten free bread at the start, and did a completely different chocolate desert at the end which was apparently divine. Very impressed they can do this with such a complex menu, and a real treat for my friend who can’t usually eat at places like this.

————————— Original review:

If I had to use one word to describe this place, it would be “fun.”

As other reviews mention, the food is excellent, and displays a serious range of talents from the chefs with flavours taken from all around the world. Every dish had some clever flourish that the servers were always excited to explain, and you could tell that there was genuine enthusiasm from everyone involved to deliver a great dining experience.

We’d particularly recommend the wine flight, which has got to be one of the best we’ve had anywhere. Plenty of places will provide good wine pairings, but here the food and wine genuinely riff off each other. Dessert wine was used to complement one of the very rich main dishes, and an orange wine that would be a challenge to finish on its own became the perfect compliment to another.

The pacing was a tad chaotic at points, with the table filling up somewhat alarmingly at the start, but it’s a very minor point given the quality of everything. I can see this place getting a star with a bit more polish, but then maybe we shouldn’t want that because the prices would only go up.

Lastly, my partner dropped her phone as we were leaving, and within a minute of getting out the door my phone rang several times to call me back to collect it. Cue a somewhat undignified jog to avoid missing the train, but really appreciated the quick action from them as would’ve been a real...

1921 On Saturday night we enjoyed celebrating our friends 60th birthday with a fabulous dining experience at 1921 a fine dining restaurant in Bury St. Edmunds. We arrived before our friends and received a very friendly welcome before being escorted to the bar. Here the team continued their warm welcome to us while we waited for our friends. Once they arrived we were seated at our table. We started with a cocktail before deciding to go for the Seven Course Tasting Menu with Wine Pairings. There is also a chance to have a selection of Canapés to enjoy with your drinks. The Canapés were absolutely delicious leaving us with great anticipation for what was to follow. The tasting menu started with a heavenly first course of Pumpkin Tortellini with pickled walnut and sage. This was followed by the Mersey Crab , Quail and Foie Gras Mosaic , Scallop Sirloin of SuffoyBeef , Pain Perdu and Mint Choc Chip. These dishes were paired beautifully with a delightful selection of wines. We also enjoyed fabulous service from all the team but especially our waitress Issy who was very friendly and professional. This really was a fantastic evening and definitely a restaurant that I would highly recommend. Many Thanks to all the team at 1921 and hope to see you again sometime...

Divine. I was over from abroad visiting, and a dear friend took me to 1921. We had the simple lunch menu and it was just superb, and art on the plate. My thanks to a very dedicated and fine chef. The house white was also spot on; I can't remember what he said it was now, but my quip of the house wine reflecting the house didn't let the house down. Very nice choice, thankyou. The lunch waiter, was 100% personable and professional, and without the arrogance from the new youth I encountered at other Bury establishments. He was the perfect host in manner, quietly aware of each table so you never felt unattended. The house wine was delightful, and the food sensational. I've always loved Haute Cuisine, it's about passion and the restaurant delivers that in spades! With everything so generally expensive anyway theses days, this is the one place I'd happily dig that bit deeper to visit again. I'd forget the other wannabes after the experience here. The most wonderful lunchtime I've had in many...
