Received probably the worst service I've ever had this weekend at Voujon in Bury St Eds, somewhere I've been before and had a great time, but will never go back.
We were a big table of 16, so were given the set menu with no choice (fine). We ordered with no apparent problems and starters came out quickly, however they were dumped at one end of the table and we were told to pass them down ourselves, with no warning of how hot the plates were so we all had to use napkins.
We then waited an hour and 10 minutes for our main courses. 3 of the 16 were missing, and when we made staff aware they were put out and said everything that was ordered was served. Again, this was all dumped on the table at one end and too hot to handle to pass down. We had to try and remember what all the dishes were despite us asking for this not to happen.
The food was a mixed bag, my curry (lamb Pathia) was tasty, but others were genuinely disgusting and tasted so sweet with horrible tough meat. We ordered draught beers, and could see them being poured fresh but were all warm and flat.
The worst thing came when paying. Despite us complaining about having to serve ourselves and food missing/substandard, a £70 service charge was whacked on. We were also charged £28pp rather than the advertised £26pp, and told we were given last year's menus. There were no apologies, just accusatory language, the same as when we mentioned food was missing. Another couple paying also said they'd never be returning.
We paid and left, and now...
Read moreWe booked ahead at this restaurant last week after finding it on Google. On arrival we were briefly greeted by a staff member who promptly disappeared into the back? before another guy came over to check our reservation. After what felt like an awkward and uncomfortable length of time we were shown to our table. No big deal, but the service thereafter was pretty devoid of courtesy. I've had worse service for sure but i always hope to be served with a certain level of friendliness and hospitality. It's nice to be treated like a guest and not an inconvenience. So we ordered and I chose a bhuna which tasted fresh and was delicious, as was the rice, naan and sides. Well deserved 5 stars, and i thought it made up for the questionable hospitality. But then half way through the meal I noticed something which really troubled me, one of the bowls containing our food was chipped. I don't claim to know everything about food hygiene, but I know enough to say; that is bad news as chips and cracks will harbor germs and bacteria. It really put me off the remainder of my dinner. From a price point, I considered the cost of our bill to be very reasonable for two people, and would say it provided good value for money. Would've liked to rate higher but the hygiene issue is unacceptable...

I've been a regular customer of Voujon, both dining in and ordering delivery, but unfortunately, the quality and service have noticeably declined over time.
In a recent order placed through Uber Eats, I received the wrong main dish—despite the correct item clearly being listed on both the order and the receipt. When I contacted the restaurant directly, I received a lukewarm apology and was told I could have a free main with my next order. However, they wouldn’t take any responsibility for the mistake because the order went through a third-party platform.
To be clear, this issue had nothing to do with the delivery service—this was purely down to the restaurant’s failure to check the order before sending it out.
The food itself has also gone downhill. It used to be packed with flavour, but lately, the dishes have become bland and uninspired.
If you still want to try Voujon, I’d recommend ordering directly and collecting it yourself to reduce the risk of issues. As it stands, though, the experience no longer lives up to its former reputation....
