The Angel Hotel, a Wetherspoons pub in Whitby, is a popular spot with a lot to unpack. On the one hand, it's a reliable choice for those looking for cheap beer and food in a central location. On the other hand, the atmosphere can be quite specific, and it's certainly not for everyone. The pub is situated in a prime location on the harbourside, offering some great views of the River Esk. This, combined with Wetherspoons' famously low prices, makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and locals alike. It's often busy, which can contribute to a lively, albeit sometimes "grey," atmosphere, as you described. You also hit on a key observation: the presence of a very elderly group of people who tend to "hog" tables. This is not an uncommon sight in many Wetherspoons pubs, which often serve as a social hub for a wide range of people, particularly during the day. It can make finding a seat difficult, and it definitely contributes to the unique, and sometimes slow, pace of the place. Overall, the Angel Hotel Wetherspoons is a no-frills establishment. It provides exactly what you'd expect from the chain: an affordable menu and cheap drinks. The atmosphere can feel a bit mundane, but for many, the price point and the great location are more than enough to make it a worthwhile stop. If you're looking for cheap beer and a place to rest your feet with a view, it does the job. However, if you're seeking a more unique or vibrant pub experience, Whitby has many other...
Read moreAdequate in most requirements. Room had grimy nets and one curtain slightly torn/ stained. Large piece of mouldy biscuit lodged under edge of window pane which didn't shut properly. Chain came off the bath plug so nearly impossible to get it out to empty the bath. ( that was our last evening so reported it to Reception when we left the next day). Very depressing decor. Had breakfast on 2 mornings ,virtually cold on 1st day. Slightly warmer the second day. Evening steak almost raw( asked for medium rare) but husband too embarrassed to ask for a replacement. Thought we would enjoy a few pints over our 3 night stay but first 2 were almost flat, one very cloudy. Turned out to be ends of barrels as they were all different the next day. Poor choices on offer so didn't try again until our last afternoon and had an ok IPA with a cider as nothing else appealed. No Abbot on after the 1st poor pint. Usually a mainstay at Wetherspoon and usually well kept. Room not cleaned on our 2nd day. Mid afternoon we were asked whether we needed anything restocked on the hospitality tray. I'd already taken more milks and water bottles from the open cleaners room so that we could have a cuppa so we said we were OK. No offer of taking the rubbish away. Parking a nightmare in busy season we were very lucky to get into the St Hilda's one which is nearby but a...
Read moreEasy to find, parking over the road, and a longer stay permit can be purchased at the tourist information in the car park. Staff friendly, check-in was easy, and the receptionist was really friendly and helpful. The room (317)was a little tricky to find, but using common sense, we located it and was surprised when we walked in the room. Cosy yet still spacious, two windows, one with a view of the harbour, the other over towards the shops however no noise from the road, didn't hear anything at night time from guests except the odd door banging later at night In the room, good tray of tea, coffee hot chocolate and even biscuits and water good selection. The bathroom was with a walk-in shower of which I requested prior to arrival. Restaurant, it was easy to order on the app, and service is not a problem at all. Central Hotel, good amenities and location brilliant for the seaside and restaurants. Knowing that some of the building is old and the building is grade II , the floor felt like we were moving and not level at all. Quirky, but it took some time to adjust, The lift was slow but wasn't a problem. Pillows were hit and miss, too soft or too hard. Duvet could have been bigger for the bed. With all that said, we will be...
