Visited 10th August and was seated in " conservatory" area round the back. Staff pleasant enough and offered to clear a dirty table for us so we could sit out of the sun. Place tired and could do with a good clean ( walls scuffed and skirting boards filthy). Ordered fish and chips bread and butter and cold drinks.

Drinks arrived quickly however still waiting for food 40minutes after placing order. ( Place now quiet as lunchtime rush over! ) Chased this up with staff who returned shortly after with bread and butter- bread dry and butter pre spread so had completely melted in the heat.

Fish and chips then arrived- chips were stone cold. Decided to call it a day by that point and explained to staff that we would pay for the drinks but would not be paying for a cold meal we were unable to eat.

Again staff were pleasant and apologetic showing us the chute system that meals were placed in before being sent from the kitchen down to the restaurant.

Obviously our meals had been sitting inside this dumb waiter contraption some time before being served to us.

Left hungry and disappointed however all was put right by a very enjoyable meal of fish and chips down the road at Hadleys.

Hetty and Betty better get their act together as there's lots of room for improvement in both the food and cleanliness of the place.

Also, having several very yappy dogs in the restaurant didn't make for a good experience. Perhaps tables outside for...

Sadly very disappointed and left feeling annoyed - This review is not a reflection of the food - But the young girl that served us who knows maybe she was having a bad day - But she definitely needs more training in how to deal with customers in a polite manner . After missing a meal off our order ( this happens no big deal ) when I asked where it was and explained what we had ordered by having to get her attention from off her phone behind the counter she gave me a filthy look spoke to her college and continued what she was doing - I then had to ask again as no one had confirmed if this food was actually coming to be given a eye roll and a filthy look . This wasn’t my mistake and that kind of attitude doesn’t belong in a restaurant. Luckily the dark haired girl working came over and apologised and I complained to her about her colleagues bad attitude. I have never seen someone behave in such an inappropriate way to a customers request snarling eyes rolling and ignoring them . Such a shame and hopefully she can gain some further training and learn some respect before you pull in more complaints on what looks like a lovely place - sadly we left feeling fustrated on paying them for our food . My glass was also dirty so I drank out of the can wasn’t worth...

Got off to a fantastic start... really friendly, lovely staff, quaint surroundings which have been used to maximum effect so didn't feel cramped. First glance very reasonable prices for fish and chips £11.50 compared to some other restaurants in Whitby but..... soon adds up with the extras (bread, butter peas, drinks which others include) to be less value for money. In hindsight, should have gone with the Fish and Chips afternoon tea.... which we did see on another table and looked amazing value at £34 for two with fish and chips, cakes, scones and tea or coffee! Not so sure we would call ours value... scampi was really nice and a good portion. Fish was surprisingly on the small side and at first glance looked like a boxed frozen fish (it wasn't but does give you an idea of the size) sausages were very low quality and not enjoyed but all the chips were beautiful! Lovely fresh bed and hot hot hot mushy peas... which was great as I hate them luke warm. Lovely array of local drinks with Whitby ales. All in all purely based on the staff who were a big positive would try again but would look at the afternoon tea option for...

Fantastic food. My wife had the Hetty and Betty "High Tea" on a three tiered cake stand: Bottom layer: Fish and Chips Next layer: Bread and butter, Mushy Peas and condiments (including tartare sauce); Top layer: Scone with clotted cream and jam. My meal: Regular size fish and chips. I asked, "If THAT'S a regular, imagine if they did a Large!" Put it this way, a normal appetite would be ok with the small! The cod fish melted in the mouth, and tasted very fresh. The 'fish' wasn't just a lot of batter either. In fact, the batter was light, non-greasy and was lovely. The chips were not a chippy size portion, but that was ok with me, as I prefer a large portion of fish in proportion to my chips. The chips themselves, were light and fluffy and crispy. My wife and I agreed, our fish and chips meal was one of the best ever, and were certainly "a bit posh," which is what you expect. The staff were warm, lovely; let us sit where we wanted; attentive but not 'in your face'. Was service and atmosphere good? Exceptional; Was the food good? Exceptional; Would we go again? You bet.

Whitby was exceptionally busy the day we visited and we found this place by chance and they could fit a family of 4 in which we were grateful for. Our server was just full of charm and happiness and it made such a change and you could not help but smile when she was at the table. The food though for me was a little below par. The fish and chips with mushy peas came to £16.50 and whilst the batter on the top looked crisp underneath it was sadly a really soggy mess floating in grease. Because of that I had to leave the batter. The chips I think were triple cooked but again something wasn’t quite right with them but as I hadn’t eaten all day I ate them to stave off hunger. My niece had the cheese and ham toaster which in my opinion looked a little sad but guess can’t glamorise that very well. Overall great service but could do better on the food front.
