We did an evening Wildlife cruise while visiting whitby for the day when on holiday in Yorkshire. It was a 2hour trip from 6pm until 8pm out into the bay to see the local wildlife and views towards the mainland. We booked in advance on the website since this particular type of trip is a once a day only one so limited spaces.
It was hands down the best activity we took part in for our whole holiday week and also the best value! Firstly, the team running the boats and harbour platform were excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable and happy to chat. The boat was a good size and seemed well maintained. The seat pads were a welcome addition making the trip a little more comfy. There was plenty of seating for everyone and it was not overcrowded at all (which was refreshing after some other attractions/activities we've done this week which cram as many people in as physically possible).
While on the trip we got to witness a huge flock of Gannets feeding which was pretty cool and then loads of seals floating around and swimming alongside the boat. They were so cute and there were so many of them! Then the cherry on top was a small pod of minke whales who came pretty close to the boat and surfaced several times. The crew on the boat got just as excited as us passengers on seeing the whales and did a great job of trying to keep up with them so we could see more. On returning to shore we got to see a beautiful sunset over the cliffs which really finished the trip off beautifully.
Honestly a fantastic experience and worth every single penny of the small cost per ticket. If you only do one thing while in Whitby, make it this boat trip!
If we lived local we would be on this boat trip...

After doing the 20 minute harbour cruise earlier in the day which was interesting, we booked an hours sunset cruise.
It was £10 in cash or if booked through their website £9 plus a small booking fee.
We arrived 15 minutes before departure and were escorted to the boat, Summer Queen. We were lucky enough to have a seat at the bow.
We left on time and went through the harbour entrance and slowly made our way out to sea and along the coastline.
One of the staff came and sat with us explaining about the different landmasses that could be seen. He then spoke about dolphins and whales and showed us a video on his phone of a sighting last year of a minke. Apparently the best time to see whales in September, although a couple of minke have already been seen this season.
We watched the sun slowly going down and turned back towards the harbour. In the distance we could see dolphins jumping from the water. We followed for a time, but unfortunately they were going away from us and we then headed back towards the harbour entrance. At this point another group of 3 came closer and closer to us and put on an amazing display. Due to this our 1 hour cruise lasted 15 minutes longer than planned.
The sun set just before we entered the harbour.
I don’t know what facilities there were on the boat as we didn’t leave our seats for the duration.

Read moreThis is without a doubt the best value wildlife cruise in the UK and beyond. There are more whales seen per £ than anywhere else i have seen. I must also say that seeing cetations (whales/dolphins) is not guaranteed. But I have seen more on these trips than anywhere else in the UK.
This is my third trip the previous ones a few years ago my first was longer, and a lot more expensive. All trips were excellent value. I wondered what we could see in 2.5 hours but we saw lots, these trips only operate in late August/ September when the herring move closer to UK waters in vast numbers.
Each trip We saw between 10 & 25 minkie whales, lots of seals and birds and bottle nose dolphins. Gannets were fishing, shot like arrows into the sea which is spectacular in its self. Humpback whales also Fin whales have also been occasionally seen along the UK East Coast.
It was almost poetic when watching once we arrived where everything was feeding.
For those wanting to see whales, dolphins and other wildlife its very good value and...
