Attended the Whitby steampunk weekend, have been going for the past few years, for anyone who has never been its time you changed that. Even if you don't do steampunk it's a very interesting spectacle, people are dressed in a wonderful array of different costumes from home made to hired to especially made, there is no end to the different ideas. More could be done to make provisions for those of us who camp. As I being disabled can not manage my scooter from the top campsite and back up after a full day around the town, unlike what some people have said most of us don't mind paying as long as we have a safe place to park and even better if there where...

Not been to Whitby for a while so had a walk along the beach from Sandsend down to Whitby. Had a wander round the town and were making our way back but along the top route. We had reached the top of the town by the Whalebone when we espied this little cafe. We called in for a hot drink. Although small, I am sure it is very busy. Great cup of cappuccino but what sold it for us was the position. There is a great, sheltered little seating area which has a wonderful view up and down the coast and to watch the promenaders along the top. The shelter was very welcome as it was a blowy November day and had the added bonus of being glass so the wonderful view was...

What a fab location! The whalebone arch is a reminder about Whitby’s past when whaling was practised. Whaling was a chance for great wealth for those who managed a successful catch, but incredibly dangerous. Many boats were capsized and men killed. On a fleet’s return to port, eager onlookers would watch for the telltale sign of good news: Crews would tie a whale’s jaw bone atop the ship’s mast as a sign that they had killed the animal and not the other way around. There is a fantastic view of the Abby, the church and the cottages clinging to the cliffs across the bay on the East cliff.

It's a replica of a whale's jaw bone that replaced the original arch thst was erected in 1853. The whaling was thriving industry in the coastal town of Whitby in Yorkshire in the last century. Sailing to the seas around Greenland hunting the whales for their oil. It was a way to earn lots of money but was very dangerous and sadly many ships and their crews never returned. A whale jawbone was attached to a ship's mast to signify that they had killed the mammal. And of course awesome views of the harbour and the Abbey.
