This 2 day break was bought for us via Buy A Gift as a pre-wedding present so we could relax ahead of our big day. Unfortunately I suffered a knee injury which meant we had to reschedule the trip twice. The staff were very understanding about the situation.
We also spent a little bit more of our own money to put towards a higher standard of accommodation.
Upon arrival at the Westmorland Inn, we quickly realised there were no car parking spaces whatsoever. We were advised by staff at the inn that we could park in the street behind near the bowling green, despite signs saying that the spaces were for use of the bowling green only. Unfortunately, there were no spaces available until nearly 6pm so spent a couple of hours driving around Bowness before even heading for our room.
Pictures of The Westmorland Inn are very deceptive. The space inside looks a lot bigger in the photos and we hardly recognised the inside due to the awful redecoration with floral wallpaper rather than the classy country theme that's advertised online.
We stayed in Room 5 which is on the top floor and we were extremely disappointed with it. The room had three black walls which made the room incredibly dark, especially considering the only source of natural light is from the window which is virtually blocked by another building outside. The choice of tea and coffee facilities were a little odd - no decaf, no spoon just wooden stirring sticks, only one hot chocolate (two people staying), two sachets of oat milk, one bottle of still water and one of sparkling water. There were no glasses for water/toothbrush/toothpaste.
I definitely wouldn't consider the toiletries to be "luxury". Our bottle of body wash was empty and the body lotion is located inside the shower cubicle above the body wash for some strange reason. The shower cubicle is tiny but could be made bigger since there's a considerable gap between the wall and side of the cubicle which is currently just dead space. Thankfully the weather during our first night there was extremely hot and we were able to have cold showers. Although it wasn't by choice. There wasn't any hot water flowing and the shower pressure throughout the stay was extremely low, barely a trickle! The bedside lamps were coated in dust, as was on top of the mirror, headboard and wardrobe (where we put the suitcase) and cobwebs could be seen. Admittedly, the pillows are the best ones I've ever laid my head on.
The food was incredible at The Westmorland Inn, genuinely one of the best meals I've ever had. The goats cheese starter and the chorizo starter were absolutely delicious. As was the fish pie and chicken with root veg.
The location of the accommodation is brilliant, on quite a steep hill but the lake, shops, restaurants are all within a stone's throw.
I feel very disappointed in our trip to The Westmorland Inn. It isn't value for money by any stretch of the imagination and certainly wasn't worth the extra money we paid on top of the two night stay someone else had already forked out as a gift. The inn definitely needs a lot of work but could be brilliant if key problems in reviews were addressed (the dark depressing decor, "luxury" toiletries, cleanliness) and perhaps consider putting on breakfast for guests so they actually get something from their stay other than a headache from the constant cooing pigeon...
Read moreOur recent stay at the Westmorland Inn in Bowness was a major disappointment, and we encountered numerous issues that made our experience far from enjoyable. ||The problems began even before our arrival. Communication with Kyle through Hotels.com was appalling. We had requested to add an extra night to our booking but received no confirmation, leaving us uncertain about whether the room had been reserved. To avoid losing the extra night, we had to book it ourselves through Hotels.com. Upon arrival, we were informed that Room 7—the room that had been booked—was out for maintenance, and we were allocated another room for the first night. The girl who checked us in had to make multiple phone calls to determine the status of Room 7, eventually finding out we could use it after all. This unnecessary confusion highlighted a lack of organisation and professionalism. ||Once we moved into Room 7, it was immediately clear that standards were far below what we had expected. The overall cleanliness was poor; dirt and debris on the stairs were present upon our arrival and remained untouched for the entirety of our four-night stay. The room itself was dark, dingy, and poorly equipped. There were no hooks to hang anything, and the wardrobe only had four hangers, making unpacking impractical. The bed, while somewhat comfortable, was rickety and unstable. ||The bathroom added to our frustration. The extractor fan didn’t work for the first two days and then randomly started working again on the morning of our checkout. Although shower gel was provided, it was of poor quality, and there was also a bottle of moisturiser oddly placed in the shower, which seemed careless and out of place. To make matters worse, the mugs in our room were never replaced, so we had to wash them ourselves in the small sink, which was inconvenient and unhygienic. ||One concerning issue was that the windows in the room had no restrictors, which could pose a safety risk, especially for families with children. This oversight was surprising and unacceptable for a hotel. ||Housekeeping was nonexistent unless we specifically requested basic items like tea, milk, or toilet rolls. We were assured the room would be serviced after 10 am on Friday, as the housekeepers were on annual leave and were assured that the person would do it themselves, but no one ever came. By day four, we placed our bin outside the room in a desperate attempt to get some attention. While the bin was eventually emptied, it was simply placed back outside our door, likely by the only capable staff member, who started his shift at 5 pm. This individual was the sole bright spot in our stay; his helpfulness and professionalism were the only reasons we’d even consider returning to the pub, as he on 2 evening's after we went to the bar to have to ask to have tea bags and milk he replenished the refreshments. ||Although the bar staff were generally friendly, they were clearly overstretched, and key items like San Miguel beer were unavailable for the entirety of our stay. ||Having previously left a glowing 5-star review for the pub, this visit has completely changed my opinion. The poor communication, lack of cleanliness, safety concerns, and general mismanagement made this a frustrating and disappointing experience. Sadly, we will not be returning, and I cannot recommend the Westmorland...
