Lovely to see the old venue finally revitalised. Bit cookie-cutter “British chain gastro” inside, but it is looking smart (the Morris and Co. wallpaper upstairs a nice nod to John Lewis which the clientele will appreciate). Outside is very presentable. Service was affable and we felt we were attended-to.
Food is shockingly overpriced and calling it average-at-best I think is generous. Expect microwaved packet meals and anything that can be dropped into a fryer after starting the day’s service in cryogenic stasis. Expect to pay £18 for fish and chips.
One of our party had gravy which tasted strongly like it had caught on the bottom of the pan and had carbonised. To let it go out like that tells me that nobody back there is tasting anything; shame as the venue has better potential.
Unfortunately this is a pub group that knows it can get away with serving uncomplaining local masochists the kind of food that gives British cuisine an international bad reputation for the sake of margin. The Ship is exactly the same: just slap on an aspirational price point that massages the ego of the Land Rovers in the carpark and a write a chefy-sounding menu that misdirects punters into assuming they’re at an actual restaurant.
If Stange and Co’s development kitchen was half as good as their copy writer, this would have been a much...
Read moreBeautiful pub and beer garden which had been well re-furbished throughout. Had heard great things regarding the food and service but was left bitterly disappointed. Starters and mains served together, seemed to be a massive inconvenience for 3 individuals to order their own respective food at a table outside - had 4 comments to this nature from staff though after working in this industry it's pretty standard to me, food was mixed. Starter (soda bread and butter) was lovely, however fish and chips was basic - fish ok but chips severely undercooked and inedible. At just short of £18 a plate, you expect better. Dessert (chocolate tart) had a beautiful wild cherry sorbet but ultimately the burnt tart case left a bitter smoky taste like burnt pizza in the mouth. Desserts messed up three times in a row.
Has the potential to be a great pub, but the ordering systems and quality of food need significant improvement for the price, especially compared to local competitors like the...
Read moreTook my mother on a trip back 'home', as she had heard good things since the reopening. Car Park full (run up to xmas to be expected), so we were doubtful we'd get a table despite it being 5 pm on a Monday. It was chocker inside, too, so even less positive outlook. It took a few mins to get someone's attention to ask about a table, which is my only minor gripe. However, from this point on, all things went really well. We were seated down the stairs on a large table lovely presented with xmas crackers, etc. Good looking menu, nicely laid out with gluten-free options clearly noted. Service at the table was great, the food also, and despite it being very busy the food came really quickly. Some carol singing in the background, too, made for a wonderful atmosphere. Definitely will be back(been back and same great service and food). Well done, guys, especially for opening at such a crazy hectic time of the year. You have a great...
