Not happy with the service here for a birthday meal.

Booked for 12 people, only 11 attend.

We were sat across two tables which to start wasn’t great as they were different sizes and seemed cramped, almost like they count fully accommodate a large party.

The two waiters who took our drink were pleasant enough with everyone and this review is not for them.

When we asked about the steak deal that was on, we had to wait for menus they were not given to us when we sat down which seems strange seeing as it’s advertised?

We were then informed the deal could only take place for up to 6 people (as stated when booking the table online).

When we raised this the waiter asked the chef as he “wouldn’t be happy” and came back to say that was correct.

We then placed our order and explained only 5 people were having the offer so could we order all 11 meals together to which we were told no, it would be two orders that would come out 10 minutes apart which we agreed to do. There was a 10 minute wait between ordering for both tables which cause further delays.

There was a 25 minutes apart delay between the two tables being delivered their food, the first having already eaten their meal by the time the second had arrived. We kept being told it would be “5-10 minutes”. THEY DIDN’T TELL US THERE WAS A DELAY WE HAD TO ASK. Several sauces were missing and never accounted for.

When the second food did arrive one additional waiter said “just put the food there” in a very abrupt tone which was not appreciated. He also threw tomato sauce sachets on the table we requested.

When the manager came over to the table we explain the service was extremely poor and it was not good that we waited so long between the two tables being served.

We asked why we had to split the order, stating that if all 11 of us had ordered steaks from the “normal menu” and not the “steak deal menu” would it have all come out together to which we replied yes so we simply wanted to know why on this occasion 5 having steak and 6 not was any different.

He stated the chef would have told him to tell us it was be 1 hour wait if we did this which they DID NOT INFORM US OF AT THE ONLINE BOOKING OR IN PERSON. Which again I said is unacceptable. If they can accommodate to 11 steaks from the normal menu why can they not to 5 deals steaks and 6 additional meals?

The manager then stated that any booking over 10 people should have been a party menu but when I was called earlier in the day they confirmed anymore than 12 would have been a party menu.

The overall attitude and service was appalling for a moderately priced restaurant.

They left plates in front of us not cleared away and even had the audacity to leave the service charge on the bill. They also never asked us if there was anything else they could get us or how we got on.

We also question why the bill came out as 1 bill if it was 2 orders to which they replied “we just forgot to split it” … which in my opinion shows they were being difficult.

Overall an awful experience and we would not return. If you cannot accommodate for large parties then they should not allow you to...

Booked a superior twin room, B&B, at a good price (£155, can cancel within 5 days of arrival) to include an outstanding, quality breakfast (order off a comprehensive menu for table service - no buffet d-i-y - lots of choice, all prepped or cooked to order. It's a very attractive building in a wonderful location with an easy riverside stroll to the Cathedral and then into town. Car parking is in the adjacent public car park, about £11.00 for 24 hours. The internal public spaces are very well decorated. Alex, who checked us in, carried our suitcase all the way to the room - now you don't get that with a Prem. Inn! Small, old-school lift. Booked for early dinner in their restaurant known at 'Browns at the Quay', which also has tables outside for drinks, dining etc as well as a smart restaurant indoors. Dinner was very good, top-notch presentation and flavoursome. Service/staff excellent. A free glass of prosseco came as a nice thank you for staying there. The bedroom was a good size with a number of extras (iron & board, fan - so no air con presumably), coffee maker but only 2 little tubs, shower robes if you like that sort of thing. The bedroom decoration is a little passe - a touch of the Jackie Collins 1980's vibe = mock-fur throws, black furniture or sprayed silver, huge bedside lamps provided low light, awkward little handles of the side and dressing tables suggested style over substance. Bathroom grouting needs tidying in a couple of places, good towels. Note: everything comes with a service charge of 10 per cent - inc drinks in the bar/lounge area. You can get them to take it off but who wants that dialogue and faff. The place was buzzing with passing trade as the weather was sunny and it being a cracking place for drinks/nibbles or more over looking over the river. No complaints at all, would stay again. Great hands-on...

We’d stayed here in an apartment (#7) six months before, and loved it so much that we decided to have another overnight stay en route to Oxfordshire. I booked directly with Browns and, at the time, asked if we could have apartment #7 again and was told that this was fine. However, on arrival, we were given apartment #4, which is on the floor below, and, whilst it was lovely, spacious and extremely comfortable, we were disappointed that it lacked the glorious river views of apartment #7 due to the trees immediately in front of the balcony. Notwithstanding feeling let down about the view, we did have a delightful stay. ||Being two friends, we always enjoy being able to have our own room, so that we don’t disturb one another, and that was one of the major factors in our decision to book an apartment. The beds in apartment #4 were exceptionally comfortable and we both slept incredibly well. Breakfast, which is served until the wonderfully late time of 11.a.m, was delicious, as was dinner which we had in the early evening of our arrival, accompanied by a glass of complimentary prosecco each. The river view from the restaurant is just gorgeous and, watching the swans and rowing activity, provided us with the perfect backdrop for dining. Service was tip top; staff were so welcoming and obliging, despite being extremely busy. There’s a really good ambience in the restaurant too, something that my friend and I both commented on last time.||Although the hotel doesn’t have its own car park, Copenhagen Street car is literally just a couple of minutes walk away and very reasonably priced at £10 for 24 hours. As well as the beautiful riverside location, Browns is also perfectly situated for the city centre which is a five or six minute stroll away. Overall, we had another great stay and hope to return...

Only giving 1* for the lunch we had which we rated as good. No stars for customer service or the room we had. Booked online for the mid-week special for £210, with an extra £10 supplement for the fillet steak, really! Spoke with Richard (the manager) the day before and confirmed that we have booked the 'Deluxe Family Room with Roll Top Bath ' Richard said "yes of course, we will make your stay special", well, we checked in and we were taken to a small room with ensuite, I said to the manager Alex (not Richard) that it wasn't the room we booked and could show him the confirmation email of the booking, Alex huffed and said that Richard had said all we wanted was a bath in the room. On the way to the next room he let a big glass door go in my face and continued to escort us to a separate block, the room (had a roll top bath) was absolutely freezing, even Alex said is was cold and that he would turn the heating up to 19°. 19° in January? There was a sign above the thermostat saying "DO NOT CHANGE THERMOSTAT" really? And then the room, PLEASE see videos, had not been cleaned for a very long time. I have a disability and that cupboard door that fell off missed the steel in my ankle by millimetres. That was "the straw that broke the camels back" and my husband went to complain. All he got from Alex was we will give you a refund, no apologies whatsoever. Myself and Husband have tattoos and as soon as the management saw us as "common" we were treated differently, not the normal clientele. In all honesty, this place is overrated and most definitely overpriced. We have stayed in 5* establishments in the UK and abroad and we would never give this establishment an accolade. I MIST DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND 'BROWNS @ THE QUAY'

Perfectly lovely restaurant with boutique hotel above 💜. I wish I were staying longer!! I was in room 301 - a lovely suite with positively blissful bath, quirky furnishings that were perfection itself, and superlative staff in both hotel and restaurant areas. I dined here last evening, and my meal was superb - coconut carrot coriander soup and goat cheese salad (note, however, the salad is mostly cheese and little lambs lettuce), and a fantastic New Zealand Saivignon Blanc. The accommodation has all the little touches that make a stay special - a glass of prosecco upon check-in, fresh milk for your morning coffee/tea in the mini fridge, clothes brush, mineral water, beautifully scented toiletries, and great linens. The only thing less than perfect is no hotel carpark, but I knew that going in, and a council carpark is a couple minutes’ walk away. Stay here - you’ll love it too!!!

Very poor service, they were EXTREMELY slow, then also told me I hadn't got any money already off the bill (I had pre-booked and had £40 off the bill). they made me force open my bank app because they refused to believe me. They then magically found my name in the system. We had to ask for some water 3 times. It seemed like there were 2 girls who didn't know what they were doing (trial shift? Or just incompetent?) they even had to be told by the manager to clear the empty glasses up. To add insult to injury they add 20%(!) service charge to the bill, which we had to pay because we were in a rush to get somewhere else because of their slowness, and we didn't think they would be quick at taking it off the bill. Completely useless. Shame because the food was really lovely! The sharing platters are huge fyi. Watch out for seagulls if you eat outside ;)
