I really wanted to love Jason's Donuts after hearing about them for months we woke up at the crack of dawn to get there before everyone else did. We got there about 5 min after opening and there was already a line out the door and one flavor almost sold out.
Unfortunately for me, the donuts were not my cup of tea. Let me preface my review by saying that I do not like bread (other than doughnuts/pastries). These donuts are not made like any other donuts I've ever had. They are made with a heavy, brioche-like dough for the base, and they have barely any air in them unlike most doughnut stores which are light and airy. You can see the split open donut pics in reviews to see what I mean. The donuts are dense gut bombs with the flavor of a loaf of bread plus frosting. The inside of the filled donuts in particularly seemed raw still, they were wet and doughy, and undercooked. I believe this is an issue because the dough is so heavy--you can see it in other reviewer's pictures that there are pockets of raw dough sometimes. The doughnuts were extremely chewy, almost mochi like, due to the amount of gluten in them. Mind you, none of our donuts were the mochi donuts as they were not available at the time. I really wanted to like Jason's Donuts since everyone said they were the best, but even the flavors of the donuts were ruined by the bready-dough. The only doughnut I found edible was the Boston cream pie doughnut, and I still would put it last in my list of doughnuts in Anchorage due to the fillings/toppings they use and the raw pieces I had to pick out around the center.
Things I will give them points for: friendly service, nice open set up, huge selection of flavors including interesting seasonal flavors, lots of drink selections including Martinelli's apple juice and milk. If you are a huge bread fanatic, and are always hungry, I think you will like their donuts. They are pretty huge in general, and for only four-ish dollars, I would say they will keep you full for a while.
One other criticism I have for the business, the fact that there wasn't a written menu of what is available (at least at the time we went)--or perhaps a tray with each type of donut for the day--made it difficult to order as a first time customer with low vision problems. The woman working at the counter had to read off literally every donut for us since we didn't know what they had, and there were a lot of things to read off for only one person working on the counter with a line out the door. They may want to consider finding a way to fix that for people who are visually impaired--it would prevent the lines out the doors in...
Read moreVisiting from Texas and my friend (who lives here) said this place is new and they sell out of donuts FAST!! So I had to try!
Really wanted to try the Dubai chocolate donut but they only offer those on Friday and Saturday. Not sure if that is well known or maybe it was on the website or Facebook page and I missed. But if you are reading this and you want the Dubai Chocolate donut go on Friday or Saturday!!
Anywho.. I bought several different ones: classic glazed, Oreo topped, twist, apple fritter, classic glazed cake and cruller.
The crueller was great nice light and unique. The glazed was a solid glazed donut. They are very pillowy thick donuts (bready) I was hoping the fritter would be less of the breadiness and more frittery. So a bit on the thinner side and bit more apple presence. The rest of the donuts are the same just with toppings. My friend enjoys a good chocolate filled donut however their idea of a chocolate filled donut is just putting the filling in the middle of the donut hole so it was like a dollop of filling. Where as other donut establishments actually fill the dough with filling “inside”. The cinnamon roll did not have enough cinnamon. It’s a cinnamon roll it should an abundance of cinnamon brown sugar (which essential to a cinnamon roll) it really is just bread with what was supposed cream cheese icing but it didn’t have that cream cheese taste.
They offer merch as well. Service was very nice and efficient. The shop is nice and clean and you can see all the donuts being offered.
They have several options on cinnamon rolls when we went and they had brownies as well. All and all the donuts are not sugary sweet so if that is something you are looking for this is the stop.
Again this is my review based on my tastebuds. Stop in and give them a try! Something on the menu...
Read moreWe got 6 donuts plus 12 donut holes and they tasted great! The donut holes were light and fluffy, super tasty. They have super unique flavors, something for everyone! Blueberry Poptart: super natural blueberry flavor- very impressed! 10/10 this is my favorite one Dubai chocolate: super fluffy, lots of filling, beautiful presentation, a little pricy but appropriately priced for what it is & current market 9/10 Nutella filled: 7/10 my only points docked are for it taking 3 bites to get to the filling but overall VERY tasty! I would order it again Cream cheese filling: 8/10 very good but also took 3/4 bites to get to the filling. I think just a tad more filling and I’d be giving it a higher rating. Fluffy, sweet, good quality Cream filled: 7/10 took a while to get to the cream!!! Very very sweet Cinnamon roll: 8/10 a little blander than I was expecting but the dough was really soft and the glaze very nice. I’m going to take that one home and heat it up, I would expect the warm one will be a 9/10! With that said - the donuts are amazing but we showed up before they opened/ early and waited for TWO HOURS!! I do think one more staff member would really help the flow but we did go expecting a wait. It was a little hard to see just one person manning such a busy line but she absolutely crushed it and gave 10/10 customer service. Super sweet, friendly, helpful! We were a little disappointed that we couldn’t try one of the fritters, they ran out super fast! Maybe a tray of fritters? We will be returning most likely during the winter when less people are all about! I would say to give them a try, the donuts are...
