The Witching Flour has been on my radar for a while. Stories of lines waiting to get in and dazzling photos of precious, edible creations filled my screen and my brain.
While I had been otherwise consider another local bakery for pastries, I remembered about the almost speak-easy like bakery nearby so I took the venture over. I arrived shorty after open and remembered "oh yeah, the line" before taking my spot in queue.
It honestly was not a long wait, and I spent the time watching people looking through the window, hot with anticipation over which items they'd like to have this week. The person in front of me asks: "Have you been here before?" I told her I hadn't, and we proceed to talk for a few minutes about how wonderful this bakery is. Her eyes glowed with excitement over her description of a special treat she's getting for her and her family. It sounded almost as if a tradition was starting.
I finally get into the bakery, and have my first chance to look at the selection up close. However, I am distracted by a conversation the owner is having with a customer. I hear the owner humbly say ".....all I can see are the imperfections. This one is under-proofed, that one looks a bit un-even..." I stare back at the display of treats before me and see what looks like pure perfection. Only a TRUE artist is that humble and critical of themselves. I make my selections, after some awkwardness on my part, and head home to dive into the precious cargo I have acquired.
I get home and open my box, taking the obligatory (and attached) photo of my cache, I first select a savory "roasted golden beet and creamy dill danish". My taste buds erupt in a explosion of new and wonderful tastes. The flavor combinations are unfamiliar, unexpected, and so incredibly brilliant that I stand there in awe, making rather grotesque noises at how exceptionally delightful this experience is. The journey comes anew when I then try the "nectarine lemon thyme twist" I also got. The same experience, but also slightly different. A showcase of mastery over other flavors and techniques.
(If you've ever seen PIxar's Ratatouille, the scene where Remy is watching Gusteau and he says "Good food is like music you can taste, color you can smell. There is excellence all around you. You need only be aware to stop and savor it.")
When I say that there is nothing of this caliber within the metropolitan area, I mean it. I haven't seen a place pour as much heart and soul into their work than I have here. This place IS special. I hope that it remains and become one of the best kept secrets of the city. I haven't been able to push the curiosity of "what does next week's menu look like" out of my head.
That person in front of me was on to something. I think that maybe I just started a new tradition. I plan to be back more times than can count. Thank you for sharing your work and gift with...
Read moreMy apologies on this review as we went here about 3 weeks ago and I only just got around to posting. My wife and I had heard of the Witching Flour by name but had never been. On a whim we decided to roll up and try it. At 10:01, there was a line of more than 20 people with more coming. They are open 10-2. We ordered 5 pastries (though there is a discount at 6).
After trying this place I will certainly wait in line again! Seriously, I consider myself a doughnut coniseur yet I have not had anything like that creuler. Fantastic...
Read moreThis bakery has the best pastries I’ve ever had in my life. I finally tried Witching Flour this weekend as a recommendation from a friend who frequents regularly. It was even better than I expected. They run out so you have to go early & wait in line but it’s worth it. The price range for pastries is $5-$6 with a box of 6 donuts for $32. It is worth it. They’re not your typical pastries. The flavors are unlike anything you’ll experience elsewhere. This weekend, I got a maple bar, the lemon elderflour meringue danish, a lavender black currant donut, & my favorite: thai tea donut with a coconut chocolate bark on top. I got a savory croissant & another danish not pictured. Everything was incredible. The flavors were unexpected. The line actually moved quickly given there were probably 50 people in front of us & we waited 40 (like & ordering time). The people running this place are super lovely. They’re busy but they answer questions & take time to help you so you don’t feel rushed even with the line. This will be my go to place for pastries. The love, care, & creativity put into these pastries are unparalleled. The flavors change every weekend & are a nice blend of sweet & savory so there’s something for everyone. I’ve gone to bakeries all over & I have never anywhere else (not in NYC or any other big cities) had pastries that were as delicious as these. It is very clear to see this place is the product of someone’s dream come true & I’ll be supporting that & going here as often...
