I absolutely adore this charming, little, road-side coffee spot!
Immediately as the building comes into view, you get a look at the outdoor, bistro-esque, wire-framed seating. This is just a sliver of what the City Coffeehouse has to offer in terms of esthetic. Entering the building itself is like taking a step back in time. The brick walls and large hanging track door instantly hits you with a 1920's, starving artist, alley-cat character that's more than pleasant to be apart of.
The service and servers were very polite, reserved, and efficient. The ordering process was quick, and the barista working was very insightful. In fact, my company and I only waited a few minutes for our order to be set in front of us after we sat down. As far as price is concerned, I wouldn't say its over-priced or underpriced in comparison to other coffee shops of equal standing. I think that the prices accurately match the amount of beverage or food you receive along with the quality in which it is made and served.
The menu is larger than most cafes and has a list of variations; Coffees, bagels, ice-creams: there are sugar-free options, classic picks, or specialty beverages that anyone can enjoy. Personally, I ordered a blueberry-bagel with peanut butter and a sugar-free banana nut latte. I thought both were equally delicious and well made. My only complaint would be on how sloppily the peanut butter was smeared over my bagel, and that the butter packets they give you are overly firm and not easy to spread at all.
I would highly recommend this café if you are in need of a quiet place to study/work. I wouldn't be afraid to take my laptop or I-pad here and just bust out some work emails while enjoying a delicious specialty latte, and would welcome anyone else to do the same. I definitely plan on making the City Coffeehouse a part of my...
Read moreCity Coffee house has been one of my favorite places to get coffee other than the major corporations like Bigby, Starbucks, etc. Friday 23rd around 2:30 pm City Coffee was as busy as it usually is at this time. There was an employee I have never seen working on my 30+ visits since the beginning of the year. I could tell upon approaching that the employee was everything besides happy to be there, which is something I could normally overlook, however the employee did not acknowledge me at all: instead she stared blankly at the screen of the Register. "How are you doing today?" I asked, which she ignored and continued to stare at the register screen, saying nothing. 2-3 minutes went by, and then the employe shrugged her shoulders looking at me for the first time "Are you going to order or what?" the woman snarled. I was honestly shocked, normally the employees at City Coffee House are so friendly! This was one of my favorite places to grab a coffee or just hangout, but after experiencing the unwelcoming and offensive attitude of the staff I'm not sure if I will be back. Like I mentioned before, this was one of my favorite places aside from the major Corporations because of the wide selection of flavor syrups available, and mainly because the vibe of City Coffee is so unique, warming and welcoming, as if you could spend a whole day just lounging on a couch or scrolling through the internet, I really hope that if I do decide to come back that the employee has a better approach/greeting and hopefully was just...
Read moreUpdate: The coffee keeps getting worse. It seems to me like they don't care about the details anymore, and / or they aren't enforcing any good enough quality standards. I've been coming here 2-4 times a month for 5 years, I've been getting bitter and acidic espresso with no crema almost every time now. Basically just concentrated coffee with no texture and bad flavor. This means they aren't training their staff on how to use the espresso machine, don't have anything dialed in, and aren't teaching their staff what bad espresso looks like. Or the owners just don't care. I've watched the staff make pour overs in a hario without rinsing the filter. Most of their whole beans are over roasted. Their "medium light" is closer to a dark roast from most contemporary roasters. Over all just not good coffee, on par with your average Bigby. I find this pretty sad since this place is close to home, and downriver doesn't have any other options for locally roasted coffee. Clearly this doesn't effect their business too much because most people are ordering sugary drinks, but if you want a good coffee, look elsewhere.
I want them to be good, and they have been better in years past, but they just aren't on their game and seem to be going in the wrong direction.
Original review: This place has great drinks and the staff is always friendly. Cool atmosphere and the art for sale is always fun to shop. Their pour overs are high quality, and they have a decaf that actually taste like...
