First, let me say.. the chips were served warm. There is no simpler and wonderful thing a restaurant can do than to serve those little bites of deliciousness warm. So first impression was immediately "YUM!" Service was nice, the server was friendly and prompt with refills and such - we never lacked at all. Couldn't ask for more. When she was taking my order though (Chicken Chimichanga) she stopped to confirm, "Did you say steak or chicken?". I confirmed, chicken. But sadly, what arrived was a steak chimi. I don't ever send food back so I ate part of it at least. I really don't enjoy steak at all. But what I could tell, in the little I ate of it was that the pastry shell was so flaky and delicious - never had a shell that delicious before - and the meat inside, whether I enjoy steak or not, I could tell it was moist and flavorful - - not tough and chewy. My daughter ordered the Chicken Asado, so I traded her a bite of mine for a bite of her chicken. I put that chicken bite in my flaky wonderful chimi shell, and was not disappointed. If I'd gotten the chicken chimi, it would have been outstanding. Oh well! So while I was disappointed, I left with a strong "These folks cook GREAT food" impression. That said - I really didn't care for the rice and beans much - there was some extra flavor to it, not sure what it was, but I didn't care for it. But eh, others might not feel the same. My oldest agreed, she didn't like it, but my youngest did like it. Long story short? if I wanted some delicious food, in a nice environment, I'd absolutely go back there again. Also , I found myself a little surprised when we left at how quickly the meal had gone. We didn't eat extra fast (my youngest is a sloooow eater) but we were in and out very quickly. Thanks Plaza for...
Read moreI am still in shock as we just left the restaurant- our waitress was Maria. She had an attitude as soon as we were seated. My husband asked for unsweetened tea and she chunked it on the table & walked off. He tasted it & realized it was sweet and as soon as came back with our chips he asked for the correct tea , she snatched it from his hand and rolled her eyes. When she brought his tea back she took our order but acted like we were inconveniencing her just by our presence. Food was brought by someone else. Hubby had finished the chips & crumpled the paper in the bowl - she asked if he wanted more chips & he said yes - get this - here’s where we were shocked (she was wiping down tables behind us) she reached into the bowl and straightened the paper in it in front of us like we did something wrong & I watched her go and dump more chips on top of the paper she just touched! While we were eating she sat behind us wrapping silverware & kept yawning loudly and saying in Spanish she hoped we’d hurry up so she could get out & go home. Someone really needs to talk to Maria about her treatment of paying customers - and the proper handling of food. We won’t be back as we are still grossed out by her touching the paper in the bowl & putting chips on top. I am sure a health inspector would have placed a hefty fine just over that one incident. We start our tip out at $100 and for every mistake we deduct $1 - Maria ended up with a $1.78 tip if that gives you an idea of the mistakes & poor customer service...
Read morePlaza Mexican Restaurant in Altus presents itself as a promising destination for Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine, but my recent visit left much to be desired. Service was attentive and efficient, with staff maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor throughout the meal. The atmosphere was unremarkable but comfortable—a typical casual dining environment, neither particularly charming nor off-putting.
Unfortunately, the food failed to meet even modest expectations. The presentation was lackluster, and the flavors were disappointingly flat. The queso was particularly unpleasant, lacking both depth and freshness, while the chips were noticeably stale, robbing the classic chips-and-dip experience of any enjoyment. Across the menu, dishes lacked the vibrant, robust flavors that define both authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex fare. The chili sauce on the enchilada was especially egregious, tasting overwhelmingly of chili powder rather than a balanced, savory blend—rendering the dish nearly inedible.
Despite the restaurant’s positive online ratings and enthusiastic local reviews, my experience was a significant disappointment. The food simply did not reach the standard of even an average Tex-Mex establishment. I cannot recommend Plaza Mexican Restaurant to those seeking quality Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine in Altus; there are certainly better options in the area for those craving authentic flavors and fresh ingredients. Given the underwhelming meal, I...
