Did you ever have one of those days where nothing goes right, until one thing finally does, and then everything else just....clicks? That's the kind of day it was for my friend and I yesterday when we had the incredible fortune to find ourselves hankering for pizza after a long shift at work, and stumbled into Frank's Pizzeria in Ambridge on the drive home! When you walk into a pizzeria, and see generations of one family slinging pies, and a photo of the Patriarchal Pie Maker proudly hung up on the wall, you know you've just walked into Pizza Heaven!  Not to mention, Frank's amazing wife Costanza to this day still makes pizza and calzones right alongside her kids and grandkids! Frank's does multiple things right, and really nothing wrong.  For the style of pie they make, it's complete and total perfection.  They feature thick and premium cuts of pepperoni, releasing just enough fat to compliment the wonderful lightly sweet sauce that's layered on top of the cheese.  The combination of fat from the pepperoni and sugar from the tomatoes make the ideal blend of tangy and sweet that's so rare to find. On top of that, quite literally, Frank's sprinkles the magic cheese, yup, Pecorino Romano which also balances the sweet and adds the perfect quality salt flavor that makes each and every slice a joy to chow down on. We're not done yet!  What pie would be complete without a strong foundation?  I'm not a baker, but I have to think there's a special yeast, flour type or set time for the dough, in order to produce such a perfectly airy and lightly sweet crust that's an absolute delight to devour. Another highlight that I've only seen at generational pizza shops, brined green peppers!  These sliver sized cuts, (better than diced for prominence and flavor release in my mind!) are soaked in brine that helps release the beautiful sweetness of peppers, all the while making them the ideal tenderness for complimenting those thick and tasty pep slices. One size fits all at Frank's, where the 14" pizza is a perfect serving size for two, a small family or someone blessed with seconds for the next day.  Take and bake options, and some merch are front and center also! As I'm writing this review, I can't stop thinking I'll head there again today after work, as it's the rare restaurant that when I'm done, I'm thinking about going again ASAP and telling as many friends and family members as I can in the meantime! Try it once, and I bet you'll be wanting to try it again, just like me today!

This is the only place around in Ambridge, so I can understand why it's an institution. And the people are very friendly. It's take out only and the pizza takes 20 minutes (calzones 25), so call ahead or figure out how you're going to kill the time. The pizza was pretty good, but nothing special - although having the cheese under the sauce is a little alarming. The homemade sausage is a standout, as are the brined green peppers. I found the calzone to be better than the pizza - very nice texture to the crust.

This is some of the best pizza in existence. An Ambridge staple. Such a unique taste and unique crunch, I've never been able to find anything quite like it. Most pizza shops all taste the same. Frank's Pizzeria does it different... and they do it right! (Because they've been in buisness for decades).

My grandfather worked in the steel mill with Frank. My family has been eating Frank's pizza since it opened! Mike Ditka, who grew up in Ambridge had this pizza shipped to him (still might too). This family only establishment makes the best pizza around, with consistent quality since its inception over 60 years ago. Funny thing is that the price of the pizza hasn't gone up much from its original price either. I've seen some ridiculous complaints on other reviews, but I understand pizza is a pretty hard subject to agree on. Yes, the sauce is on top of the cheese. Yes, the dough is heavy. It has a red, very thick tomato based sauce. The ingredients are quality. When you call, it's likely you'll hit a busy signal, and its cash only. They've been voted best pizza numerous times (by the Trib I believe). Anyway, if it isn't clear this is my favorite pizza of all time. Now, I grew up in Chicago and still enjoy a good deep dish (sorry east coasters - or mid atlantic whatever you want to call this region - but you don't understand the meaning of deep dish around here), but overall Frank's is...
