A little seasoning goes a long way.
Kalimantan cuisine is sadly underrepresented, in my humble opinion. The bright, fresh flavors and tantalizing herbs are a treat for the palate. Thusly, Seasons Kitchen USA has been bookmarked by me for a long time. In Anaheim for the OC Green Expo, I took a quick drive from Center Street Promenade to Seasons Kitchen USA to see what they're all about.
Glancing through their robust menu, my eyes spotted curry laksa. Laksa mee is my favorite bowl of soup in the world. I've only had it at two other restaurants, previously, so I can't say I'm an aficionado, but when I saw Seasons Kitchen USA has curry laksa Fri-Sun only, I knew I found my pick.
Curry laksa- Soup's on! Differing from other bowls of laksa I've had before, this had a very thick broth, which had little to no coconut milk that I could spot. The creaminess of coconut milk is what sets apart laksa from other Asian soup for me. Also, Seasons Kitchen's laksa is prepared with flat rice noodles. I much prefer ramen noodles (house-made, even better) for the chewy mouth feel. The rest of the ingredients were quality. The chicken was super tender. I can say I enjoyed my bowl of curry laksa. Unique from what I've had before & from what I was expecting, but good. I find I still enjoy laksa mee made with ramen noodles, shrimp & coconut milk, moreso, though.
The popular menu items at Seasons Kitchen seem to be their Hainan chicken, pork char siu & bak kut teh. I'll have to order those next time.
Service was fine. Seasons Kitchen seems to be a fast casual eatery. I didn't wait very long for my order to come out. A good amount of tables for seating, I wouldn't recommend very large groups.
Parking is at the 99 Ranch Market plaza, which can be quite hard to come during the weekends.
Seasons Kitchen USA, I'm a fan! Their mouth-watering menu, especially the pork char siu, has me salivating for a return visit soon. I'm also fond of the free ukulele & guitar lessons every Tues 6pm - 8pm. I can tell the establishment is run with love and I could use a Michael Jackson (grass jelly, coconut & soy milk) right now.
Highly...
Read moreLocated in the same plaza with 99 Ranch and Starbucks, this restaurant is a hidden gem. My husband and I, we were planning to try this restaurant the weekend before, however, it was closed during dinner time due to private party. It was noted on Google, but we didn't check it, so it was our bad not them. Lol. Didn't discouraged, we came back the following weekend. Boyz, this restaurant didn't disappointed us at all. From ambiance to service and what else? Food, of course. We tried 2 appetizers which were chicken satay that came with sticky rice cakes and cucumber served with peanut dipping sauce. Chicken was tendered and peanut sauce was creamy and tasty. Next one was Roti Canai with chicken curry dipping also came with pan toasted flat bread. Very authentic and delicious. For entre, I chose Char Kwey Teow rice noodles. It was a combination of stir fried flat rice noodles with Chinese sausage, shrimp, egg and bean sprout. Kinda Pad Thai, however, I like this version better because it wasn't oily at all. Oh so tasty and yummy. My husband ordered its famous Nasi Lemak which was steamed rice in coconut juice served with curry chicken, roasted garlic peanuts, boiled egg, fried anchovies and sambal (a kind of mixed tamarind sauce). It got 2 thumbs up from him. Don't forget to choose medium spicy level for a kick. Last, but not least, a Happy Roti for dessert. Very unique. It was a blend of hot and cold, you'll get one scoop each of coconut pandan and jackfruit cashews ice cream on pan toasted flat bread sprinkled with coconut flakes. OMG!!! Soooo delicious, especially, jackfruit ice cream. Not sweet at all. Love it. Service was friendly and attentive. The 2 ladies servers were frequently checked on customers and refilled our water quickly. Most items on menu were under $10 and generous portions too. Good food, good service, affordable price. We'll definitely be back to try other dishes soon. Do come on off peak hours to...
Read moreAs a Malaysian, this is one of the best, if not the best Malaysian food I've had away from home. I haven't been home in years and the food I ordered hit home in all the right places.
We ordered char kuey teow, crispy skin pork belly with egg noodles, roti canai with chicken curry, and roti kaya. My pictures do not do the food justice. They taste wayyy better than they look.
The char kuey teow has the wok hei (breath of wok) flavor I was looking for. It's even better than some of the vendors in KL! Perfect amount of flavor. Bonus points for the crispy pork pieces and Chinese sausage they added!
The crispy skin pork belly with egg noodles was again very well done. Perfect amount of sauce like they make it in KL. They made it dark and savoury, just the way I like it. The pork belly had actual lean meat on them, barely any fat - just the way I like it too. I just wished I ordered won tons to go with it - but this is my bad.
The chicken curry that came with the roti canai is PERFECT. You can't find Malaysian chicken curry that tastes like home anywhere else. I even had some of it with the egg noodles / won ton mee haha. The chicken was tender with no tendons and the curry was bursting with flavor. The roti canai, needless to say, is so crispy. They absolutely nailed it!
The roti kaya was put on top of roti canai. I've never had kaya with crushed peanuts and coconut shreds before and I was mind blown.
The owners heard it was my birthday and gave us a free angku kueh. Definitely made with a lot of love - it had the perfect thickness ratio of rice cake to filling.
Thank you for making me feel at home on my birthday! It was also my boyfriend's second time trying Malaysian food and he absolutely LOVED it! He didn't quite like it the first time but that restaurant didn't quite make it right. Thank you again. We will...
