Dean's Cake House — Restaurant in Andalusia

A friend of mine was raving about the 7 layer cakes. She bought the Caramel 7 Layer Cake to share. The cake was disappointing. The Caramel didn't have much flavor. Maybe because it was whipped instead of being more dense so the flavor would be concentrated. The Cake (sponge) had a weird texture from all the larger than normal air bubbles and had no taste when ate separately from the icing. Some other reviews complained about the texture and taste too as compared to previous experiences. They suspected Miss Dean changed the recipe or switched to box cakes. This was my first Dean's Cake so I can't agree or disagree with those claims. A lot of people rave about these and really seem to like them. Seems to be more hype and a tourist trap to me. I'll pass next time...

i sure expected a lot more after all the rave reviews. if i don't have time to bake something from scratch, we just won't have dessert as thes nothing like homemade. the only thing i can say for them is that the layers are moist and if you purchase from their store front, you do get a fresher cake than what you would get from another vendor, plus the price is about $4 less. the german chocolate layers are not made with a sweet baking chocolate. it is a dark, devil's food type layer. the coconut frosting is decent, but nothing special. the caramel taste like a caramel flavored buttercream and is orange like it has food coloring. nothing like a homemade cake. if you don't know what homemade taste like, these cakes may be an an okay substitute, but I'll never...

My family saw the signs on our road trip and we had to stop and pick up a cake to bring home.

The location is very small and unassuming. We walked in and checked out all of the cakes that were on the shelf and in the cooler. We chose the classic seven-layer caramel cake and a friendly, smiling person rung up our order.

My family really enjoyed the cake. The light and fluffy layers reminded me of homemade. It was definitely more of a spongy texture than the yellow cake you'd think of from a mix. The caramel frosting was delicious and addicting! If you're thrifty like I am, you'll appreciate the price, which was a fraction of what I've paid at other bakeries for a similar 7-layer caramel cake.
