I'm originally from Michigan, but I moved to Tennessee for college back in the mid-90s.
We have a long-standing tradition that whenever anyone in the family travels to Michigan for a visit, they have to bring back a dozen or so nutty donuts to Tennessee.
We almost always stop somewhere along the Michigan-Indiana border to pick up donuts. I've never been to Tom's before, so I thought we'd give this place a try.
We arrived around 9 am, and I didn't see any of the nutty donuts we usually get in the display case. However, when I asked if they sold nutty donuts, the young woman said they sold out of the ones they made that morning. Despite that, she said she would make some up for us. Around the same time, a coworker heard we were from out of town and said that she had a few more left in the back.
Now, when I saw their brand of nutty donuts, I was a little worried because they aren't exactly the same as what we usually get. All worries were vanquished when I tried one on the drive home. They are just as good, if not better, than what we typically get.
I got a lemon-filled donut, too, and it was fantastic.
Since we were traveling, we inquired about using their restroom but they didn't have a public bathroom but the young lady behind the counter directed us to a few places nearby that had public restrooms.
I was impressed.
Tom's has incredible customer service and great-tasting donuts.
On our next trip north, we'll definitely stop by Tom's on the way back home for some donuts. I'm just upset that we didn't buy more than we did. If I would have known they were this good, I would have picked up...

There were three total sprinkled donuts in the whole front display and only one had chocolate frosting. The person behind the counter took three or four tries to figure out what donut I was talking about, the only chocolate sprinkled one. She finally gets it, takes it out along with the glazed one I wanted. She gets out a bag and I hear her putting them in while I'm looking around because I haven't been there in a while and it looks different now. I left to go to my sisters and got the donuts out when I got there, not only did the lady throw the frosting one in face down so the chocolate was all over the bottom of the bag, but she also, for some reason, SWAPPED OUT the donuts I had picked! I was the only person in the place when my donuts were taken out so it wasn't someone else's bag she had gotten confused and grabbed, and I saw her take out the right ones, the only time I was looking away was when she opened up the bag and put them in. Instead of my glazed and my chocolate sprinkle, I had a cinnamon and a plain chocolate that had been swapped out. I didn't have time to go back so I just said screw it and ate what I had. So I paid for some mediocre donuts I didn't even want. This is why I stopped going there and they haven't improved at all. They've just raised their prices. Buy your donuts at Walmart. At least the cashier won't swap them out when you...
Read moreI've known the Saylor family for several decades. My mother, June, use to work at the Angola location where she served faithful customers homemade donuts and ham and tuna salad sandwiches.
Fast forward several years, the Saylor family still continues the tradition of creating delicious donuts - including many new delicious flavors.
I've also noticed, that the donuts have gotten BIGGER instead of smaller - which is a nice change of pace. Quality ingredients and service is what keeps everyone coming back for more !
Keep up the good work Tom, Colleen, Todd, Shane and the many other super employees that make living in Steuben County quite a special place - and carrying on that delicious tradition of FRESH donuts baked daily.
Our band, "The Crushing Dadfodilsâ look forward every summer playing our music for all of those early morning risers who stand in line while listening to tunes from the 50's - 90's as they are being greeted by Tom and Todd pouring delicious hot coffee and signing customer shirts and memorabilia !
Can't wait for summer to...
