Taco Tuesday is ok, not good. Service sub par at best, STOP assuming everyone that walks in the door is a lifer and knows that just because the locals know it's Taco Tuesday that it means no point in the menu, except it doesn't. I had no idea if there was meat choices (there isn't) or toppings or sides (there are sides like fries) I'm glad I asked for the menu, as I almost thought about the nachos. Which I would have not known about if I hadn't seen a menu. We did not appreciate the rudeness when she asked if we were ready to order and I replied how would we know we haven't seen a menu. Just for her to roll her eyes and come back and toss them on the table. That attitude made me not want to spend my money there and my tip absolutely reflected her poor behavior. She could have earned 20 from me alone out of our group, instead of what was left over from the change. I work in the service industry and I appreciate both good food and service and it also would have been nice if our checks were correct but I have learned to pick and chose my battles but that also helped contribute to her not super tip. To the taco loved the shell it's like fry bread and one taco is the entire basket you have been warned. Sadly it wasn't really warm my fries were not even close to warm and definitely floppy. Really the stinker of the show was the server, so don't...
Read moreFirst visit to Yankee Clipper. It was Taco Tuesday, an event I was told I couldn't miss. Glad I went! The tacos were not your typical tacos. More like a soft pita bread shell about the size of a Nerf football STUFFED with greens, tomatoes, taco meat, cheese and sour cream. You could eat two but the food coma might be severe! I enjoyed an Exile beer with it. Yankee Clipper is a small joint with very good neighborhood bar atmosphere. My four stars come the limited number of craft beers. Iowa is getting some rep with craft beers and I just think establishments should support the home team. Would I go back? Absolutely! We only glimpsed the TT menu. Gotta find out what else is on the offering.
Hey, we're BAAAACCCK! It only took 8 months...This time it's a Thursday. I went for the fish sandwich and my wife took the grilled cheese. Both with fries and both were satisfying. The thing to remember, though, is that it is bar food, something that you have to have a liking for.
Today it was quiet. Easy to find a seat, service was quick and no long where-the-heck-is-my-lunch? wait. Conclusion: Thursday lunch hour is a good time to go to miss the crowds.
Clearly the place is an ISU-Iowa joint. I bet it's fun here...
Read moreWe went there for lunch today and had a great meal! We had the “Frips” with Cajun seasoning and cheese sauce for an appetizer. I had today’s special of Cheeseburger basket with added bacon and a side of cottage cheese. My husband had the French Dip with provolone cheese and a side of onion tanglers.
Pros: Food was tasty. We plan on going again! The added bacon was not just a strip or two, it was like a bacon square so that every bite had bacon. I highly recommend the $1.25 up charge if you love bacon (I mean, who doesn’t?!) I appreciated side options that weren’t just more fried food. They apparently have an amazing Taco Tuesday special that I’m excited to try out sometime.
Cons: The Cajun seasoning on the Frips, while tasty, was sometimes so thick that it came off in clumps and got everywhere. The poor lady was manning the bar and waitressing two rooms and patio by herself. She was excellent but it would’ve been nice if she had some help. (Not food related) For the men: Better hope you don’t have to go #2 (or that you’re not bashful about it!). There’s no separate stall from the urinals and no lock on the exterior...
