I want to share my experience. It is part of our goal to support small business owners. Although this is out of my normal circle of travel, I had to make a few stops before work and decided to try DJ's Bakery. On October 22nd I visited this bakery and placed my order, arranged a pick up time (5:15a), and paid in advance. The next morning I arrived at 5:15a to find all of the lights off, except in the kitchen where I saw 4 men baking donuts. After waiting a few minutes I walked to the front door. There was a visable sign that said, "Open 5a". I knocked on the door and even called the phone number, but no one responded. I knocked louder and a man looked up and held up 10 fingers. I went back to my car and waited, and waited,..... Eventually an police officer pulled up and I explained to him that the bakery's employees were in the kitchen, but I was told to wait 10 minutes. So we both waited, and waited.... Customer after customer pulled into the parking lot and I announced they were running behind schedule. So, these customers left. At approximately 5:35a an employee opened the door. My order wasn't ready. I spoke to a young man and explained to him I ordered an order for an assortment of three dozen donuts .There was no apology. Nothing. I waited my turn and the young man began to place donuts in the boxes- some on top of each other and others layed in the box. When I arrived at work the icing from several of the donuts had slid off the donut, coagulating in the corner of the box. Others were stuck to each other. I was disappointed with the customer service. I drove past Panara Bread, Dunkin's, and Wastenaw Dairy to try out this new place. You don't get a second chance to make a...
Read more11/22/24: This place was shared to me by my mother who just happened to notice the bakery name was my nickname(she didn't try it out though). I had some business in Ann Arbor so I decided to check the place out.
I got 2 raspberry donuts, a coconut-topped one, 2 glazed, 1 dunking donut, an apple fritter, a cinnamon roll(not shown; eaten =0b), and a blueberry muffin(i nibbled on it before the pic). The coconut-topped one was very mid to me. Everything else though.... chefs kiss fantastic =03! The apple fritter especially stood out; it had some really caramelized notes on top of the crispy exterior that was pure heaven to eat.
The slender oriental woman behind the counter was extremely vibrant and upbeat. Although I was in-and-out, its nice to feel the tone of someone who talks to you like a person instead of just another customer. Gotta be tough to do that all day(it was ~2:00p when I got here), so I respect and appreciate that.
Based on this trip, would highly recommend. I think it'd very slightly edge out my favorite place The Apple Fritter Donut shop in Ferndale, but sadly, this place is way to far out of the way to get to from where I live. I will certainly go again if I'm ever in the...
Read moreThis is a really great bakery! We have purchased pastries here more than 50 times. There is always an excellent selection of sweet, and even some savory, pastries with competitive pricing. In fact, the combination of DJ's products and prices are probably impossible to beat in terms of value. Additionally, the service is always friendly and helpful. The only criticisms are that (1) the atmosphere is pretty bland, (2) the location isn't that great, (3) the small parking lot is usually too crowded during breakfast hours and there's no room to park, and (4) the ingredients are probably not the healthiest even in terms of making pastries (e.g., no organic ingredients, lots of trans fats, etc.). On this last point, I am making an assumption based on the complete lack of advertising regarding ingredients, but I could be wrong and DJ's might use some of the best and healthiest ingredients for making pastry. Nonetheless, the wide selection of excellent tasting pastries, the consistently friendly service, and the competitive prices still earn DJ's Bakery a full five stars! A must try if you live in the A2-Ypsi area and...
