This review is not based on customer service, ambience nor cleanliness of the restaurant.
I am leaving the review solely based on the items that I ordered via their online ordering system. I placed an order for pickup for the singaporean/ Malaysian cuisine. I ordered roti canai (not roti canal, please do edit this spelling error if there is an intention to keep this item on the menu) potato samosa, nasi lemak, laksa with shrimps, beef rendang, and Hainanese chicken.
I was excited to give this restaurant a try out despite many warnings from my friends who tried this place before.
The restaurant called back to say that half of my order (nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken, and samosa) is not available, I should have flagged this for a fail and skip it all together as these items are considered a staple or must have! in a restaurant serving singapore / malaysia food but decided to bite the bullet and try my luck to see how the other dishes turned out to be.
So we picked up the food took it home in high anticipation that food might be somewhat scrumptious!
Roti canai comes in two, they are oily and very stiff. I didn't care for the side of curry that it came with which was most possibly a mixture of tumeric powder, curry powder and water.
Beef rendang - this is not even a rendang to begin with. everyone who ever ate an authentic beef rendang knows that this dish does not come with any potatoes, capsicum, snow peas, and carrots! This is just plainly a beef stew disguised as beef rendang in hopes that the person ordering have no absolute idea what rendang is. The dish itself is not bad but if you are expecting a rendang, keep looking elsewhere.
Laksa with shrimp - also not laksa. I can't even figure out what this taste like and ended up throwing it in the bin.
I hope the restaurant will consider learning in more details (or take it out altogether!) of the cuisine that they are planning to serve instead of just serving a bunch of dishes in hopes that no one is calling them out and calling it an authentic dish from the...
Read moreDecided not to order from China Tonight in Chelsea Michigan even though I work at Chelsea Milling Company aka Jiffy Baking Mixes. I stay in Ann Arbor while in Michigan. First time Happy Wok customer from Maine living in Ann Arbor for business for a few months and I absolutely love Chinese food, chinese people, their culture and their amazing food and cooking skills. I ordered Chicken Egg Roll = B, Fried Pork Pot Stickers = C, General Tso Chicken Wings = A++ but the $17.95 Seafood Fries Rice = F. Worst Fried rice I’ve ever had. The base fried rice itself was poor and had no taste then they throw in very smelly tiny scallops, the worst smelling half lobster tail ever like smelly seafood, about (6) 26-30 ct shrimp and then a ton of Surimi aka fake or imitation crab meat and the quality was disgusting like soft tissue and smelled and tasted like nothing. My picture shows about a pound of surimi, imitation crab meat but the overall quality was gross and smelled terrible. We literally gagged when we tried eating the seafood fried rice and I had to take out all of the surimi imitation crab because it was making me so sick. So disappointed as I love seafood but this rice was disgusting. I feel terrible even saying it because I don’t want the restaurant seems legit and the man at front counter is super nice and probably family of owners or is the owner but they show the seafood fried rice and seafood lo mein in the Google gallery but believe me it smells and tastes terrible. Just my opinion but I’ve eaten Chinese food all over the country and this dish just doesn’t cut it. Sorry Happy Wok but the Seafood Fried Rice just...
Read moreDO NOT EAT HERE!! AVOID THIS PLACE. My experience at this restaurant almost cost me my life... LITERALLY. I'll make this story short. I have a peanut allergy however I am still able to eat Chinese food because most places have converted to primarily using veggie oils. Here is where my problem begins. I called to ask "do you use peanut oil or peanuts in your food" the answer was No. I called back ordered my food and asked one other time to be sure they were not using any peanuts. I didn't not Oder delivery I chose to pick my food up. I entered and before I left I double checked to be sure they didn't have any of the items I was purchased on the physical menu as containing peanuts; peanuts not listed. I spoke face to face with a woman who assure me I would be fine. When I arrived to work and started to eat I instantly began having an allergic reaction. I asked a co worker to call and ask for me because I wanted to make sure it wasn't the placebo effect of me freaking myself out. She called and asked several times asking "are you sure, are you sure" the woman constantly assured her there were no traces of peanuts. 2 mins later, as my throat was closing, she called back confirming that the egg roll was indeed wrapped in a peanut sauce. Moral of the story this place, and the people working here do no know what is actually in your food. You could be eating anything and they will not be able to help at all. If you have a food allergy avoid this place at all cost. P.S. The portion I did try was not quality. For there to be so many options in Ann Arbor I would NOT choose this one. I recommend avoiding this hole in...
