based on one meal on a specific day. staff all taking Covid precautions and tables spread for safety. cool little spot in N Asheville with a sweet outside patio area for some very good Q. mouthwatering smell of wood smoke as we approached the building. order taken as you enter then you pick your table with a number. drinks and tableware brought to you. wide ranging menu with some unique appetizers-sweet potato chips, deviled eggs-,baked potatoes topped with smoked meats, and brunswick stew. meat choices include NC style chopped pork, brisket served chopped or sliced, pulled chicken, smoked turkey, smoked wings, and St Louis style ribs. sides include potato salad, vinegar slaw, collards, fried okra, the brunswick stew, and green beans. lots of choices. choosing to try many options, we ordered the following-deviled eggs to start, 3 meat combo with smoked turkey, ribs, and brisket, and sides were potato salad and green beans plus an extra order of the green beans (we like 'em). and i added two wings-you can buy by the each or platter-because i have found few i've liked at BBQ spots so i like to try to find good ones. you can choose from any of the 5 different house made sauces from sweet original to damn hot. only the sweet tried by these heat wimps. deviled eggs were very traditional with maybe a bit of horseradish(?) and garnished with bits of red & green peppers. served with pickled onion. really tasty, even on the next day. meat trio came with hush puppies and these were a total miss for me. maybe if they were fresh and hot. potato salad made in house and quite redolent of pickle. strong but still very tasty. green beans were interesting. one dish looked to be from the bottom of a pan where the black pepper/juices had all dribbled down while waiting to be served. the other order was totally devoid of any pepper, just beans and some onion slices as if it was taken off the top of the new pan. even with the strong pepper taste in one, both tasted very good. wife thought them a bit mushy for her liking. a big pet peeve for me is bbq meats served below optimal eating temp. this was a problem with all meats on the trio platter IMO, but not the wings. turkey had least amount of smoked flavor and was also the worst temp offender. very tender, would most likely make great cold sandwich. the brisket, which can be served chopped or sliced ours was sliced, is advertised as chile rubbed but our pieces really tasted of just salt and pepper. appeared to be taken from the fatty end and not all that hot. great smoke ring and flavor. went extremely well with the sweet original sauce. i'd order this again for sure. the star in my wife's eyes were the ribs, which while a bit cool, had great smoke ring, flavor, and great pull from the bone. not so overcooked as too fall off as you pick them up. the spice rub flavor was so good no sauce need be applied and easily the tastiest meat of the trio. my superstar meat was the wings. hot damn these were close to perfect. coming with your choice of three different sauces, sweet love, hot mama, and ring of fire. the sweet complimented the smoke perfectly. the skin was crackly and the meat so moist. next visit will include a big platter of these no question. lastly, if you enjoy a good homemade puddin' i can whole-heartedly recommend the banana puddin' made here. thick & creamy with full banana flavor and nice crispy 'nilla wafers on top. great way to end a very enjoyable meal. just wish the meats had been served hotter. strong B+....
Read moreI decided to visit Luella’s because I am from Georgia, so I am always interested in tasting the variations of BBQ across the South. I visited on a Wednesday night before closing and the service was pleasant and quick. I ordered the pulled chicken tray w/ a side of toast, mac and cheese, collard greens, wings, lemonade, and banana pudding. The pulled chicken was pretty good, but there was not a ton of flavor in the chicken itself. I got Lue’s dry rub wings with ranch and a side of the sweet love sauce. The dry rub had a moderately intense flavor that I enjoyed plain and with sweet love and ranch. I tried all of their sauces, but I enjoyed the sweet & spicy sauce the most. The mac and cheese was not my favorite but I enjoyed it. I was not as much cheese or flavor as I would have liked it to be. It was also more runny than firm. The collard greens had an intense garlic and vinegar flavor that I appreciated. I would get them again. I am not a huge hush puppy fan, but they came with the tray so I tried them out, They were more plain than hush puppies I have had before in that they were more like cornbread nuggets with their sweet undertones. The lemonade was advertised as fresh squeezed for $5 per order. It did not live up to my expectations at all. It was a bit watered down and bitter. I couldn’t quite tell it was “fresh squeezed”. I got the banana pudding to-go because I knew I would be full after trying everything. The pudding was creamy and the put cookies on top that stayed crispy and had some at the bottom of the cup that were soaked in the pudding. I liked having some cookies crunchy and some soft. Overall pretty decent spot, I...

I recently used Luella's BBQ for catering my milestone celebration (25+ guests) and they were absolutely exceptional.
As someone new to their catering service, I was impressed by every aspect:
Ordering Process: Malynn was incredibly helpful in guiding me through options and quantities. The online ordering system was user-friendly and allowed for easy customization.
Food Quality: Everything was delicious! The chopped pork and chicken wings were huge hits, and the mac & cheese was outstanding. As a vegan, I was pleasantly surprised to find excellent plant-based options - their tempeh was flavorful and another vegan guest really appreciated having good choices. You don't always expect great vegan options from a BBQ restaurant, but Luella's delivers! The banana pudding was the perfect dessert.
Reliability: Order was ready exactly on time for our 4:45 PM pickup. Food was perfectly packaged, hot, and easy to transport. Nothing was missing - they didn't skip a beat!
Value: At about $18 per person for a complete BBQ feast including sides, drinks, and dessert, this was excellent value for professional catering quality.
Perfect for: Home celebrations, events where you want restaurant-quality food without the stress of cooking. Their portions are generous and the variety ensures everyone finds something they love - including vegans/vegetarians!
I'll definitely use Luella's catering for future events. Highly recommend for anyone considering professional catering...
