Fresh Food - Great Service - Eclectic Atmosphere We were driving through Athens and found this wonderful place and stopped for lunch. The interior is old world charm mixed with new modern touches. There is a nice variety of artwork decorating the plaster and brick walls. They have a small patio room and two other long dining rooms. The daily specials are listed on a black board as you enter and they have a beautiful display case of desserts in the front dining area. They were very busy even though it was well past lunch time and we were seated with no wait. Our waitress was very informative about the dishes on the menu and she helped us make decisions regarding the best items on the menu. She was very attentive to our needs and our beverages were always full. The menu has a southern modern flare with fresh ingredients. I had the most amazing fried green tomato sandwich. The tomato slices were cut thick and encrusted with beer-battered cornmeal and fried to create a crispy outer crust. They top the tomatoes with bacon, grilled onions, Vidalia bacon dressing and a soft bun. It was served with a nice side salad of mixed greens and a light vinaigrette dressing. My husband got the new south pork roll that was filled with juicy, tender pulled pork, mushrooms, spinach and cheese. It appeared to be pressed on two sides on the grill which gave it a crispy exterior that was delicious. The black beans with salsa and cilantro crème fresh was melt in your mouth and full of flavor. The desserts looked amazing but we didn’t have the means to keep it fresh during our 8 hour car journey home. The parking lot is a bit of a challenge since there is only one way in and one way out. To get out you have to back up into a one way street unless you’re able to turn around in the tight lot. I’d recommend you park...
Read moreLet me start by saying the entire experience was amazing. There was about a 5 minute wait, so we sat at the bar and my aunt got a Bulldog Spritz which she enjoyed and her friend got a Passionfruit Gimlet. They both loved them and ended up getting another during dinner. Speaking of dinner, we all started out with a salad and the Caesar, balsamic, and vidalia bacon dressing were all delicious and the salads were very fresh. As with dinner, I got the piloncillo & black pepper crusted hangar, which was absolutely insane and better than I had expected even though my expectations were already very high. My friend got the new struggleville pasta and he said it was the “best pasta I ever had in my life. Better than almost I’ve had un Italy”. I also tried it, it was to die for. Both my Aunt & her friend got the horseradish crusted salmon which was so delicious. The horseradish flavor was just right and the salmon was cooked perfectly. As for deserts, we had to get them after how good dinner was. We got the pumpkin cheesecake, toffee mocha cheesecake, white chocolate cheesecake, and the mocha layer cake. There wasn’t a bite left over. A few more details I would like to add is that it’s very cool how they cook right by you, and you can see them in action. Also, the menu’s font and feel was very home like and reminded me of my mothers cook book. Not to mention our waiter John, who was very nice and always attentive. Overall 10/10 experience, this...
Read moreA staple of the Athens community, Last Resort offers high quality food and beverage at prices lower than expected. Very popular restaurant that fills up fast even though it doesn't take reservations. I gave 3 stars b/c of my most recent experience with the hopes that things will improve at this great Athens restaurant. On my last visit, dining with a table of 5 outside, our service was subpar and disappointing for such a nice restaurant. Maybe the server had an off night, that's possible, but her half-hearted attitude from the beginning through the end was a surprise to see at a place that many Athenian hospitality workers would LOVE to work at. The salad plates were not cleared by the time entrees came out, making for a awkward exchange with the food runner. The wine bottle, ordered at the same time as entrees, was not there nor were there wine glasses by the time entrees came out. Appropriate silverware was missing at entree delivery, e.g., forks and steak knives. I don't mean to sound snobby, but these are big mistakes at a nice restaurant, especially with a big ticket table. Finally, the bill was delivered initially with wrong items, forcing the server to go back and make corrections. Again, maybe this was a bad night for the server. The food and drinks were great, and I'm a big fan of LR. I know this review won't hurt them and I don't enjoy writing it. Just hope that service gets tightened up...
