The Varsity — Restaurant in Athens-Clarke County Unified Government

We were passing through town and stopped at the new Watkinsville location. We ate chili dogs and fries in the restaurant and they were terrific. We ordered two fried peach pies to go. They were placed in a bag in a box. We opened them a few miles down the road and when we bit into them A- they were apple pies not peach, even though they were in peach pie wrappers and B - these were not fried pies, they were baked. Fried pies are crispy and can be eaten with one hand. These pies were flaky and soft and needed a fork and a plate. They broke apart and ran all over the place when we tried to eat them. $40 for two combo meals and one extra cheeseburger. Yes, I know, inflation. Did not get enough chili and cheese for my fries. Burgers were undercooked and had a measly layer of chili. Friendly staff, went about 3pm so no long wait. Unless you plan on paying dine in restaurant prices and spending $100 for four meals you should just go to mcdonalds and get the $5 meals or head over to publix and get a $6 sub. Get some good fried chicken and tater boats at golden pantry. I won't be going back to this varsity for a while. They need to find their groove...

Stop by out of nostalgia really. Got a double chili cheese hamburger, chili cheese slaw dog, and frosted orange. It was tasty, but probably did not measure up to the memory I had embellished in my own mind. I was a little disappointed with the size of the hamburger for the price, but that seems to be the case everywhere now. This is not a criticism of the varsity, but I probably will not go back anytime soon. Cheaper just to make my own much more substantial...
