I have been to La Morena con Colfax many times. Since we ended up on that side of town, we decided since it was getting late we would stop in.
I honestly was excited about the menu as it was a bit different then the other restaurant. I ordered a agua fresca de piña to drink, and my husband ordered an horchata. Our waitress brought our drinks as we looks through the menu. I was a bit undecided when she came to take our order so my husband ordered first, then I was going between the quesabirria tacos or the pozole. The waitress tried to upsell me the tomahawk steak saying how it was so juicy and tender. I decided for the quesabirria tacos and my husband ordered the fish soup.
There was a chili oil on the top of his soup that was already super spicy so we had to spoon it off and he eventually just pulled the fish out of his soup and ate that.
My quesabirria tacos were good, oddly enough the beef was a bit dry even though it was paired with the consume and melted cheese. The consume was overtly salty.
Now here's the reason for my rating.
There were empty beer bottles all around the bar top, plates were cleaned off the tables but not the cups and the waitress was kind of pushy and not just with us. She did eventually get someone to order the tomahawk steak, then tried to pack up his food and he politely asked to do it himself. She also said to him that she deserved a 20 dollar tip as she charged his card even though they got his order wrong.
There was a woman in the kitchen who was not a cook who came out with a baby in her arms, the staff were on their phones during service and again, the tables were dirty.
My husband ended up getting sick later on that night and the next day.
I really don't understand where the quality of service is so lacking and the cleanliness. I will never go back to this establishment and I hope that these issues are brought to the attention...
Read moreEdit: 2nd time experience - we came in and they offered we take a seat at the bar side, which we accepted. It started well but then it got too busy. Which happens and we understand. However, the issue was the food order. We ordered an appetizer and a main course. The waiting part we are ok with, given we see that it's busy. The issue is we got our main course before the appetizer. We were practically done eating when the appetizer was brought out. We got nachos, which is not something we can take home for later, not to mention we asked for no tomatoes and they added them. We asked if they could remove the nachos, since they brought them out too late. The bartender said sorry we already brought them out. Which we responded we would have told you not to bring them out but you haven't checked in at all. We asked for the supervisor and they never came. If the bartender would have had a good attitude, offered a discount or a sincere apology we would have moved on. But it was almost as if it was our fault the food came out at the wrong time. Once she saw that my husband got up to find a supervisor, she then said she'll remove the appetizer. Overall, bar side is a no if it's during busy times, unless there's someone helping. Other than that, the food was still good. Apart from the nachos that we didn't try. Food was very good. I was extremely happy they offered freshly made tortillas (I had corn). However, I wish the order came with more than 3 tortillas, especially with a molcajete de carne, it was big enough for two people. The waitress was efficient and polite, she even offered a discount as there was an error in the description on the menu. We had ordered a sushi that we thought had shrimp per description but didn't, eitherway it was well prepared and delicious. Overall, I am excited to return and happy to recommend...
Read moreTo the owner of the "La Morena family" on Mississippi Ave: I'm writing this on behalf of my grandparents, last week they went to have breakfast/lunch there. only to have a disgusting experience. Their server, a skinny girl (as they described her) reeked of alcohol unfortunately there wasn't another server they couldve requested as she was the only one . She never once checked on them, after a while a guy, who can only speak spanish was sent to help but they only saw him once.
The food was delicious they said,so they decided to give you guys a second chance. They Went back on Monday only to find the same server again. She gave them their order only to disapear again. This time neither the guy from the first time bothered to ask if everything was ok. They got up and paid the bill. The lady at the front asked them about how everything was, and my grandparents told her about the waitress not checking on them. She apologized for their bad experience and gave them a 10% discount card. They don't know her name or if she was the owner or the manager. My grandmother said she was a very nice blonde lady and was well dressed. They Appreciated the card, but they said unless they hire more servers that are not drunk for the lunch /breakfast hours, it is more likely they will not return. Upon having thise experience they feel the need to share this so that friends or strangers reading this can know. It is an unfortunate experience my grandma said as the restaurant...
