I used to come to Sushi Katsu quite often in the past, but it had been a long time since my last visit. Yesterday, my family and I went back, and honestly, we were very disappointed with the dining experience and the service.
The food was not fresh, and although it’s supposed to be “all you can eat,” the dishes came out very slowly. On top of that, even though they advertise “all you can eat,” there are hidden limits. For example, if you go with a large group of 10–12 people, they only allow one or two plates of grilled fish and call it a limit. I wouldn’t mind the restriction if the food was actually good, but the fish really was not fresh at all.
Service was extremely slow. Every time we wanted to order more, I had to chase down a server with a piece of paper because no one was paying attention.
What really upset me was that they automatically added a 20% tip to the bill. I understand that large parties usually get an automatic gratuity, but 20% is excessive, especially considering the poor service we received. For our group of 8 adults and 3 children, the gratuity alone was over $50. And when it came time for dessert, they only brought out 8 ice creams for the adults and 3 kids. It felt like we were being forced to ration out Costco-sized ice creams (which cost $1.50–$2 each at most), I even asked for more ice cream for the kids, but they refused and said that since we had 8 adults, we were only allowed 8 cups of ice cream. Ice cream is very cheap in the U.S., but the way they handled it was rigid, unprofessional, and lacking in tact, which made me feel unwelcome as a customer. I understand that the staff are busy and moving around a lot, but the owner should consider hiring more people to reduce the pressure on the servers so they can be more relaxed with customers and provide service with genuine care. which really showed a lack of professionalism.
The staff just worked as if they didn’t care about the customers at all, which made the whole experience even more unpleasant. Unfortunately, Sushi Katsu is one of the few well-known all-you-can-eat sushi places in Aurora, which may be why people keep going there. But based on our experience, I would not...
Read moreFood is great. Service is terrible if you order anything other than their sushi. I ordered a Tofu Salad & the Veg/Egg Fried Rice. It took almost 20 mins for my food to be served to me, with both dishes being served to me at the same time. Just minutes before my food had arrived, I had gone over to the counter & asked where my food was. Our server came over & explained to me that the kitchen was backed up & that I should expect a wait since I didn't order sushi. I could understand the Veg/Egg Fried Rice taking a while to cook, but the Tofu Salad is just the Fried Tofu off of their AUC eat Sushi menu placed on top of a pile of lettuce. Other customers around me were being served fried & cooked dishes from the sushi menu within minutes of ordering, including the Fried Tofu. So what was different about my order? I suspected that it wasn't arriving because our server had failed to put my order into the kitchen right away, then she was trying to cover up her mistake by deflecting the blame back onto me for not ordering off of the sushi menu. With all of this, & our beverages never being offered to be refilled, I was still going to let it all go & just chalk it up to her having a bad day. But then...as we left, the server & I walked past each other & I sincerely thanked her. She didn't say a word to me, side-eyed me with a spiteful look, then made it a point to loudly thank ONLY MY HUSBAND for coming in that day. "Thank you for coming in today, SIR." Very unprofessional & downright rude.
If your business can't handle offering food that requires more skill from a server than just tossing a piece of paper that's been filled out by the customers at the sushi chefs, then either stop offering the regular menu or get better...
Read moreSushi Katsu offers a decent all-you-can-eat sushi experience, though it may not fully satisfy seasoned sushi enthusiasts. During our lunch visit, the service stood out as the highlight of the meal. The servers were kind, attentive, and quick, ensuring everything ran smoothly from start to finish. One detail we particularly appreciated was that we didn’t have to ask for drink refills, especially water—they just brought it. It’s a refreshing change from places where servers ask if you’d like more free water rather than simply refilling it.
The menu, however, left something to be desired. It was quite basic, focusing mainly on rolls and nigiri. Unfortunately, it didn’t include sashimi or some popular offerings like mackerel, escarole, or smoked salmon, which limited the variety for those with more refined sushi preferences.
As for the food itself, it was exactly what you’d expect from an all-you-can-eat sushi joint—good, but not exceptional. This makes it a suitable option for beginners venturing into sushi for the first time. In fact, the restaurant seemed to attract many first-timers, evident from the tables around us, where patrons enjoyed their sushi soaked in soy sauce, creating a relaxed, approachable vibe.
The pricing wasn’t particularly high, but it didn’t feel like the best value for what you get. For the same cost, we could have enjoyed a similar amount of food with better quality and a wider selection at our usual non-all-you-can-eat sushi spot. That said, Sushi Katsu is still worth a try if you’re in the area and looking for a casual, no-frills sushi experience.
Would we return? Perhaps, but it would likely be a convenient one-off visit rather than a regular...
