Long story short, it’s worth a trip if you live close by. If it’s more than a 10 minute ride, it’s not worth your time. I will modify this review if things change.
The reasons I'd give it another go? Well:
Proximity is key – no pesky traffic lights or long drives stand between me and their buffet. I can practically smell the naan from my doorstep.
Speaking of naan, it's divine. The chicken? Tender (sometimes), and the water tastes like it's straight from the Fountain of Youth. Plus, their salad makes me feel like I've got my life together. Hassle-free, healthy-ish meal? Check!
It's a buffet – no waiting for seats or playing musical chairs with the staff. Just grab a plate and dive in.
Now, let's dish out the not-so-stellar aspects, shall we?
Customer service – or should I say, lack thereof? The lady at the front? She's glued to her phone as if she's waiting for the next royal baby announcement. I’m a 30 ur old millennial, not a boomer. I don’t care if you’re on your phone but when you’re speaking to me it’s best to look like you care. And when I mentioned the questionable potatoes, she just stared at me like I was speaking ancient Sumerian. Oh, and let's not forget the dude behind the counter who straight-up ignored us. Seriously. He made eye contact, he walked up to us, heard what we said, did not say anything, walked back to where I presume they do the “cooking”, and then walked back out of the cooking area and went back to what he was doing. The only saving grace was the plate-clearing ladies, who, bless their hearts, at least seemed to care about their jobs.
Food quality – okay, so I've got a bone to pick with their potatoes. If they're selling "fresh Mediterranean cuisine," then why does it taste like yesterday's leftovers? It's like they're playing roulette with food quality, and I'm not a gambler. Sure, the naan is delicious, but the chicken? I've had some tough, chewy pieces in the past that made me question my life choices, and now I can't help but wonder what other reheated surprises are lurking behind that buffet.
So, here's the deal, Dimassi's: I'll give you another chance or two, but if things don't improve, prepare for a photographic exposé of your re-heated food, a one-star review, and the loss of a loyal customer. I may have social anxiety, but I'm not afraid to take my hard-earned dollars elsewhere. Get it together, Dimassi’s! And remember, I could be a weekly regular, if you just up your game in the service and food departments. Don't let this love story...
Read moreAbsolutely impeccable food at unbelievable prices! This is a place that is so needed in San Antonio! Finally, an embodiment of excellence of middle eastern food! If you liked pasha then I can promise you'll love this times a million (maybe except for their pita bread which is still one of the best you can have!)
Damassi is the middle eastern rendition of an awesome buffet that leaves you wondering how in the world they would they could make money making such quality and healthy foods. Yes it is a buffet in the COVID era but they've taken every precaution to ensure the safety of their guests. All guests are required to have wear masks, sanitize and wear the provided disposable gloves prior to helping yourself to the vast buffet they offer.
The first station is a huge selection of various salads, one better than the other. Then you progress onto appetizers of your choosing - various choices of hummus flavors (don't forget to try their avocado salad), baba ghanoush (eggplant dip/appetizer), and a variety of other cold appetizers.
Walk further and help yourself to an amazing and vast selection of hot water entrees. From gyro to lamb shanks to more than you can count vegan options, you will not leave hungry or disappointed!
Everything is labeled with the names and ingredients so if you have allergies, you won't find yourself chasing the staff to get your questions answered.
No matter how much I liked the San Antonio location, this one in Austin takes the medal for exceptionalism! It's much bigger and has a lot more room for parties and big group outings.
Also don't forget that both locations also offer catering at awesome prices and are a must to consider for anyone considering to host a party but wanting to shortcut their food choices.
From amazing food choices (with a bunch of HEALTHY ones), to friendly staff, to a clean and nice atmosphere, this is one place you ABSOLUTELY...
Read moreI’m a self-declared Dimassis addict. My family and I first “regulared” the Houston-Humble Dimassis when I was traveling a lot. We lived in Greece for years, so that food is very special to us.
The Stassney Lane Dimassis has possibly the best architecture/interior styling of all (Dimassis locations) I’ve been to (roughly a dozen or more in the Houston area, a half dozen in the DFW area, the other Austin location), and the food is quite similar across all locations.
Here’s the things that stood out to me at Stassney that could be improved (hence 4 stars and not 5): the cooked spinach was runny like soup. This didn’t get refilled while we were there. The kabobs were brought out 5-6 at a time. My son and law and I were drooling like Pavlov’s dog while the cooks slowly brought out another batch of 5-6, then another of 5-6, over and over. The lamb/gyro was shaved very thin, and burried in a mound of onions or some kind of carb. I had to fish for the meat. The salt/pepper shakers were at the beginning of the buffet line, not on tables.
Overall the food was, as with all Dimassis, superb in taste and presentation, however the owner/manager’s cost control efforts are out of line with other Dimassis locations. I get it that the carb food is more profitable than non-carb food, hence it is offered first, and hopefully everyone fills up on this instead of the less profitable meats way at the opposite end. But Dimassis restaurants should be more consistent location to location, and the Stassney Lane location has all the hallmarks of being run by Mr Krabs (of SpongeBob SquarePants…viz, the Krusty Krab). This need not be, Dimassis is the GOLD STANDARD Mediterranean buffet in Texas, possibly USA-wide.
