My husband Lee and I did a google search for the best BBQ in Austin. Google pulled up Jim’s Smokehouse BBQ as number 1, with a 5.0 star rating. Google gave us directions and and we followed. We arrived at Brad’s food prep trailer (and smoke trailer behind it) on the side of the road. Honestly, we are from Louisiana, out of town, and expected to see a large restaurant with this kind of rating and reviews. I was shocked my husband stopped the car and said let’s go check it out. We stood out front reading Brad’s menu and brief bio. My husband scanned the menu, approached the window, was greeted by Brad who was super cool and laid back. His personality is very easy going, generous, and instructive. He shared some delicious samples with us. Crisp, clean, well prepared, simple flavors, that all seemed to be tasted at different times in each bite. We sampled the different coleslaws and enjoyed the crisp cabbage, sweet taste, shortly followed by sriracha heat. Absolutely wonderful. This is a culinary genius at work, in his trailer with his smoker out back. A one man show of simple bold artistry that we have never seen or experienced. Standing on gravel eating the best flavors in BBQ we have ever experienced. Go by, stop, and enjoy. You will not be...
Read moreI don’t know where to begin this review. The food? It’s of the absolute highest order. The brisket is a thick sliced, exquisitely barked, cut it with your fork, edible treasure box. The specials create a sort of delicious paradox (looking at you Bird’s Nest Sandwich) due to their limited time on the menu, but the unlimited amount of times you want to eat them. A sunset in your mouth, destined to disappear, but leaving behind a promise of tomorrow. The set up? A food truck. But with corn hole and a ping pong table out back, next to shaded picnic tables to eat and hang out at. Recently a roof was added to stand under while you order, flowers to smell and the best music playing. Which brings me to what, or should I say who I really want to talk about. Go meet Brad. He’s the owner sure, a visionary chef definitely, the prescient architect behind this whole thing. But over the months of eating his mind altering, mouth watering food, I’ve also had the distinct pleasure of talking to him, and he is so much more. Family man, generous, hard working, creative and caring, the best kind of guy. Support this business, support Brad. You might go there to satisfy your hunger but you’ll leave with a...
Read moreAbsolutely perfect. I had the special, a lamb sandwich with bacon jam, tomato, and a cucumber yogurt sauce. It was the juiciest most succulent lamb, perfectly accented with the sauces. A had about 2 tablespoons of drippings on my plate by the time I was done.
The owner is CIA trained (the culinary school, not the intelligence branch!). That background shows. Everything I've had was perfectly executed. 100% I will be going back and bringing friends!
*Update" went back and had the chopped brisket mac and cheese. I've had this dish from other places, but I was completely unprepared for what this dish was here... have you seen the show "The best thing I ever ate"? If so, thats how it felt. It wasn't just good. It redefined my understanding of what chopped brisket mac and cheese can be.
If you haven't eaten here yet, you have unequivocally been missing out on what Is the best bbq place I have ever been to, and I've been to all the greats in most of Texas. It is truly...
