If you're looking for a taste of authentic Vietnamese cuisine in Austin, look no further than Saigon Quan. This unassuming restaurant tucked away in Cedar Bend Dr is a hidden gem that serves up delicious and flavorful dishes at a reasonable price.
We recently had the opportunity to try several of their signature dishes, including Canh Chua, Bo Luc Lac, and Bot Chien.
Canh Chua: This refreshing sour soup is packed with a medley of seafood, vegetables, and herbs. The broth is tangy and flavorful, and the seafood is cooked to perfection. A bit on the sweeter side of that's your preference.
Bo Luc Lac: This classic Vietnamese beef dish is a must-try. The tender beef is marinated in a rich sauce and stir-fried with onions and peppers. It's a flavorful and satisfying dish that's perfect for a hearty meal. This owner started Bep Saigon so if you are familiar with that restaurant then those is pretty much the same recipe. Really solid for this dish and would recommend.
Bot Chien: This crispy, eggy, doughy rice cake dish is a great appetizer or side dish. The rice cake was light and crispy, and they're seasoned with a savory sauce served on the side.
Overall, we were very impressed with the quality and taste of the food at Saigon Quan. The service was also friendly and attentive. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Vietnamese...
Read moreGreat food for a fair price. We loved our lunch specials. Woman who runs this place treated us like family. Hard to find table service this good in Austin in 2025 for these affordable and reasonable prices. Food was excellent! Had the happy buddha with beef. Beef was cooked perfectly, veggies were perfect, brown sauce was good, and the fried rice was delicious and not greasy like some other spots fried rice. Eggroll was good with crispy exterior and not greasy at all. Whole place was SO clean, I mean it was spotless in there. Interior seems to be newly remodeled and feels very modern and welcoming. Big glass refrigerated case with all kinds of canned beverages from your typical American sodas plus some cans of Asian drinks and teas that looked very interesting. We skipped the cans of drinks and tried the hot jasmine tea which was above average. The chilled water for our table was brought out in a nice glass carafe with a twist on twist off lid. This place is going to be popular once word gets around. There were plenty of people coming in to collect take out orders while we were there. We will absolutely return here to try different dishes. If you don't see what you want or need just ask. They don't like to clutter the tables here with lots of condiments, but they do have them...
Read moreIt has been a day since I went to Saigon Quan, and I can't help to think how unpleasant it was.
Lunch portion was a bit small for $13, and I left feeling hungry. I ordered broccoli beef with egg drop soup, and both of them were salty. You know food here can't be good if you're making an effort to enjoy a common dish found in oriental resturants. Made me wished I went somewhere else than being served whatever I ate. Maybe I got unlucky, but it really soured my first exposure to this resturant.
Reasonably, I didn't want to tip for the meal. Our waiter was an elderly lady (who I assume is the owner of the establishment). She had eagle eyes when it came down to the payment, and she wasn't happy to hear that I didn't want to tip for the meal. "What? No tip?" She said, not once but twice. That experience, on top of salty food, really seal the deal for this review. It was my money and it wasn't right for her to demand more of my cash.
The food is salty, slightly expensive for its quanity (and quality), and the service is not the best. You better tip if you want to come back without being judged.
The interior is nice, and I think their water was the best part of the meal. I don't think I would be...
