After running a half marathon in San Antonio this weekend, my boyfriend would not stop thinking/talking/drooling about pizza. So, we made a short stop in Austin on our way back to Denton for a 'za or two. We picked jam packed Via 313 and hoped it would be worth dealing with the Sunday rush. We ordered two pizzas, and both were out, super fresh and hot, within minutes, despite how crazy busy the bar was. One and a half slices into his four slice thick crust Detroit style pizza, we realize their are little slices of meat (salami, to be exact) on his pizza (listed as 'calabrese' on the menu, and we were totally mistaken). We don't eat meat. Oh, no. We picked around the other two slices and hemmed and hawed about what to do. We'd eaten almost half. We didn't want to ask for a brand new pizza. Finally, he decided that after running 13 miles and having to sit in a car for 5 hours, that asking for a new pizza wasn't such a big deal. My boyfriend came back to our table inside moments later with a new order number on a stick, and told me that everyone in the truck was super cool and insisted on replacing the pizza, even substituting the salami for jalapeno. They even packed it to go because we were on our way out of town. Our new pizza was ready minutes later, and everything was kosher. 10/10 honestly. "If Via 313 was in Denton, it would take best pizza in Denton first day, hands down." Y'all have four, can't we get just one?!...
Read moreEditing my review as the original one was left by accident. That might explain the response below from the owner.
We came across this place while walking on the Rainey street which is a few blocks to the south from the famed 6th street of Austin Downtown. The thing to catch our attention was the live music playing there. The atmosphere is simply great there, with the food truck on one side and the live musicians performing on the other side and tables/chairs spread out in between and on the sides. Live music was 6-9 the day we went. However I felt that the live music was a tad bit too loud at times, we had trouble initially placing out order as we had to repeat a few times to convey the order properly.
We ordered the Veggie Herbivore pizza, with the 4 squares option (Actually that was the only option available, they werent serving 8 square), and a Vernon's ginger ale to go with it. I was also looking forward to the cheese bread appetizer but they were not serving any appetizers that day either which was a bummer. However the Pizza arrived within 20 mins and it was delicious. Veggies were perfectly cooked, and the pizza was the right amount of crispy on the edges. All in all a great place and I would certainly like to visit again when I am in...
Read moreThere has been so much hype about Via 313 pizza and I have been desperately waiting to try a slice. Last night I finally had my chance when I went to grab a beer at Craft Pride. The bar may have been set to high because Via 313 is just a solid 3 star restaurant for me.
The menu had a good selection with a number of meat, veggie, and other combinations. I was torn between the fig and Gruyere pizza and the Hawaiian, but I ended up going with the Hawaiian. The pizza took 35 min to cook, which was fine because we sipped on delicious craft beer under the heater.
A server brought the piping hot pizza to our table and it smelled yummy. The pizza was square with a pineapple ring on each of the four slices with bacon and ham evenly spread on top. It was very delicious, but definitely not the best pizza I've had ever or even in Austin. The thick Detroit crust was good, but I felt that the flavor of the toppings didn't compare to other specialty, fancy pizzas that I've eaten.
Also, the size of the pizza was a little underwhelming for the price of $13 - $17. I'd say it's too big for one, but not enough for 2 people for dinner. Via 313 is a great option when hanging out at Craft Pride or Violet Crown, but I probably wouldn't make plans to come here just...
