Nestled in the heart of Avondale Estates, The Little Hippo stands as a testament to Jamie and Aaron Russell’s culinary prowess, offering an eclectic mix of specialty sandwiches that have quickly become a local favorite.
One standout creation is their Vietnamese-style fish sandwich, a harmonious blend of textures and flavors that transports your taste buds straight to the bustling streets of Vietnam. This sandwich features a perfectly fried catfish fillet, boasting a thin, crisp coating that gives way to a flaky, tender interior. Served on a soft, round bun, it’s adorned with pickled carrots, fresh cucumber, and aromatic herbs, evoking the classic flavors of a bánh mì. A touch of chili peppers adds a delightful kick, while the umami aioli tempers the heat, resulting in a balanced and satisfying bite.
The ambiance at The Little Hippo complements its culinary offerings, with an all-outdoor, counter-service setup that exudes good vibes. Patrons can enjoy their meals in a charming astroturf courtyard, complete with ample seating, or under a covered patio equipped with heaters and fans, ensuring comfort year-round.
Jamie and Aaron Russell, also known for their East Lake neighborhood spot, Poor Hendrix, have once again struck the perfect chord between simplicity and sophistication at The Little Hippo. Their commitment to quality ingredients and innovative flavors shines through in every dish, making this Vietnamese-style fish sandwich yet another win in their impressive repertoire.

My only criticism would be that I wish they had a side item that was vegan other than chips. The woman who took our order said both the potato salad and coleslaw have egg in them...
