While the renovated church theme is certainly breathtaking at first (it's been done in Pittsburgh too), I was hoping to see more stained glass and less surfaces undone. It still looked a bit rough inside. But MOB is definitely atmospheric, and since this is its primary selling point, details are hard to ignore. Just like the farm brew trend popping up all over, don't be surprised if you start seeing other churches follow suit. After all, Europeans have been drinking beer in churches for hundreds of years, so it makes sense. Reading a list of beers just under the stations of the cross at MOB had me feeling a bit torn between my prudish religious faith and my passion for beer. But, at the end of the day what will keep people venturing in from outside the community, a community from which MOB will inevitable draw its diehard 20- and 30-something hipster crowd, is the beer. So how was it? In the race to get as many breweries on the map, I fear the beer is being left behind. For me it was just average. You're not getting any of those big flavored DDH imperial IPAs, Barrel Aged Stouts, or Milkshake IPAs or any designer beer for that matter that are staples of more established operations, where excitement for beer drops builds for weeks. Right now leave creative beer crafting to MD icons like Burley Oak, RAR, or the new Sapwood Cellars. The hope moving forward is you will have a church that is truly built around the beer rather than beer built around a church. Time will tell if the focus will move to stellar beer making. Right now it's a tourist trap; a one-and-done experience for anyone travelling from...
Read moreAs a first time visitor in Baltimore, I wanted to find a unique place to visit while here. I found this spot here on Google maps and was instantly intrigued. From the outside, the place is unassuming, you would never know what lies inside of the cathedral if not for the Ministry of Brewing decals on the front doors.
Once you open those doors, the smell of hops instantly wafts into your nostrils. When you come around the hallway entrance, you’re met with the grand entrance of the cathedral which is almost breathtaking. The artwork and architecture instantly captures your attention before your eyes even catch sight of the bar or beer tanks. The atmosphere is so unique. There is pop/ boppy songs playing through the speakers while you’re admiring the artwork and architecture on the ceilings, walls, and even floor. Such a cool experience.
There are many offerings as far as beer here but they also have local cider and non alcohol beverages available. I happened to visit on a Wednesday and they do not have food trucks here on Wednesday’s. However, after 4pm you are able to order from the nearby Bar 1801 and they will deliver your food directly to your seat which is convenient! I got a flight of beer and was not disappointed in any of them. I also tried one of the local ciders which I liked very much.
All in all, this is a must visit spot in Baltimore! I walked from the waterfront area and it was about 20 minutes- not bad at all on this warm, nice day. I recommend Ministry of Brewing to locals and...
Read moreCame here on a Saturday night for drinks. We brought in outside food, but they do have food trucks too. I got a 1/2 cider and 1/2 beer drink, which was really good. Growing up Catholic, at first it was weird to walk into a church and see it as a brewery. The main area of the brewery is stunning -- you walk in and see the pillars and the painted ceilings and old school ornate decor. It's obvious that the owners have taken a lot of care to renovate the space while also preserving the history of it. A lot of the original fixtures of the church (the ceiling artwork, the confessional, the church organ, church pews, etc) are all still present. They have pictures hanging up that show the renovation work that was done and what the church looked like before. It was really cool to see a historical space being preserved and used as a community gathering space, rather than being torn down and turned into an empty lot. In terms of the service --The bartenders were friendly and were able to recommend drinks. There was also plenty of seating (there's so much seating that even with 60-some people in there it didn't feel crowded). They did also have board games available for people to play, which some of the tables were doing. This was a really cool space to check out and we'll...
