Restaurant Review: The Greggory – South Barrington’s Culinary Gem
South Barrington just got a whole lot cooler, and it’s thanks to The Greggory. Nestled in the Arboretum, this sleek new steakhouse is the brainchild of two seasoned Chicago hospitality pros—Greggory and Bill—who have been behind some of the city’s most iconic restaurants. Now, they’ve brought their magic to the suburbs, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
From the moment you step through the doors, The Greggory exudes a sophisticated yet approachable vibe. Think classic steakhouse meets downtown Chicago lounge—warm wood tones, rich leather seating, ambient lighting, and a playlist that strikes the perfect mood. It’s upscale without being pretentious, stylish without being overdone.
One of the best-kept secrets of The Greggory is the second bar tucked into the east corner of the restaurant. This cozy, intimate space features a beautiful fireplace that adds a touch of warmth and charm, especially in the colder months. It opens into an additional dining area that’s perfect for quieter dinners or private gatherings, with a hidden private room just off to the side—ideal for celebrations, meetings, or special occasions. It’s a hidden gem within the restaurant, offering a more secluded experience while still soaking in the restaurant’s refined ambiance.
The atmosphere is only matched by the service. The staff here are pros—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about creating a memorable dining experience. Whether you’re here for a romantic dinner, a business meeting, or a night out with friends, they make you feel like a VIP from start to finish.
Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: the menu. The Greggory delivers an absolutely top-tier culinary experience. The steaks are phenomenal—expertly cooked, richly flavored, and perfectly seasoned. From unique cuts to filets, this is meat done right. And if you’re not a red meat lover, there’s plenty of other amazing options . The appetizers set the tone with standout options like the crave-worthy Reuben bites and the perfectly executed lobster rolls—both bursting with flavor and originality. Every dish feels intentional, refined, and created with a deep understanding of what makes a meal unforgettable.
In short, The Greggory is a game-changer for South Barrington. Greggory and Bill have brought big-city flair and five-star execution to the suburbs, and we’re all better for it. Whether you’re a steak connoisseur or just someone who appreciates impeccable food and service in a stunning setting, this place is a must-visit. Get there soon—you’ll be...
Read moreThe Greggory is a pretty cool place. We came here for a late birthday dinner. Late meaning later in the year, not late at night.
It's another Barrington offering amongst a sea of good Barrington restaurants and is nestled across from Hampton Social and Giostra. It's in good company.
While there are parking lots all around, because of all the restaurants, you'll be parking a few lots away. You can always drop the car with the valet, but c'mon, do your legs not work?
So we looked at the menu and the first thing that caught my eye were the bread offerings. Two of them for $8 and $9 respectively. When the hell did this trend start? Restaurants used to provide bread, now they're charging you for it. Is that how they raise the bar? Nickel and diming you with pricey bread that used to be free? It's not like customers would fill up on bread and water and then ditch.
So guess what? On principle, we did not order bread.
I was interested in the wedge salad, but the roquefort dressing and $19 price tag turned me away from it. We split a Caesar salad instead.
Next was our main entrees. I ordered the Altair Wagyu. Holy cow, was it good. Tender, juicy, flavorful. It was one of the best steaks I've ever had. They know their stuff when it comes to steaks. My wife got the rigatoni. There wasn't a whole heck of a lot on the menu for her as she doesn't eat meat (though not a vegetarian, somehow). It wasn't expensive, but here we were in this gorgeous restaurant, and I'm eating a delicious cut of meat and she's eating basic rigatoni. Clearly this is hear for those who don't eat steak.
I could tell that she was underwhelmed and so we skipped dessert and opted for a DQ near our house. She likes that place and why not, it's still ice cream.
This is a place to come to show off your bougie self. A place to be seen. A place to order a crazily-priced cut of meat (though delicious) just so you can say you ordered that cut of meat. It seems like a good place to have a business dinner to flatter someone.
It was good, but there are better places to go that we both can enjoy for the food and atmosphere without caring...
Read moreFirst, the restaurant itself is gorgeous. Beautifully chic! A little dark but seems like most restaurants are these days. Our waiter was very prompt and friendly. No issues there. The Sommelier on the other hand was a bit odd; wound up and just acted off. He helped us choose a bottle of wine which we didn’t care for. So instead of helping us pick another, he never came back to our table after he was clearly irritated we didn’t care for his choice. For the price we were spending on this bottle he should have came back and offered to assist again. But nope, we never saw him again. We ended up just purchasing by the glass at that point. Now on to the food. If everything was HALF of what it’s priced; I’d have no issues. The food was sub par at best. Extremely overpriced and underwhelming. We started with the wagyu tar tar and bone marrow. Lacked flavor and was heavy on a seasoning that I couldn’t quite pin point what it was. Then it was served with 3 thick slices of a multi grain bread, which was just an odd pairing for something so delicate. Mediocre. Then we had this weird crab salad with avocado. It not only lacked flavor but also appearance. It was really strange looking and very heavy on the mayo. Oh and it was $30! So disappointing. We then tried the lobster rolls and those were good. Light on the meat but good flavor. At this point we were all worried about spending the $$ on a steak since the table next to ours ordered one and it was black on the outside, raw in the middle and completely charred. So the 4 of us ordered pasta and the roasted chicken dish. The only one worth mentioning was the lamb tortellini which was excellent. We followed the meal up with the white chocolate mousse cake which lacked any and all flavor. They comped it since we expressed our dissatisfaction. Overall for a $400 meal, we left there unsatisfied and extremely disappointed. It’s truly unfortunate we didn’t have a better experience at such a newly...
