I judge Mexican cuisine based on how closely it resembles my second family home cooking (an actual family in Mexico that my family is good friends with) and this place drops the ball in all areas.
Service: SLOW. I have been in slow service restaurants before, but this is an all time killer. Took half an hour to get my drinks after we sat down. The order was wrong the first time. Never got any refills unless we flagged the waitress down. Waitress was also very unapologetic and dispassionate. The worst part of this? The side we sat on was all empty save two other tables (of about 15)
Food: The quality of the food was not what I expected at all. I ordered two tacos, enchiladas and tamales, and a fajitas plate for myself and my wife. The tacos were bland, with only meat lettuce and barely any tomatoes, no cheese or sauce/salsa either. The enchiladas were very salty, and the sauce on it tasted like it came out of a can. The tamale meat was dry and gritty. The only half decent thing was the Fajita plates. They came with decently seasoned beef strips and the vegetables were cooked properly at least. The chips and Salsa they brought out however took awhile to get to us and the salsa tasted like Pace. If I want Pace I can go to the store.
Prices: Outlandish for the quality of service and food presented to us. I've been to better restaurants for the same.
Atmosphere: The only thing I felt was authentic was the Telemundo channel on TV. It really tries too hard to be culturally Mexican by overusing iconic gag aesthetics like sombreros, cactus and drunk Mexican paintings, when culturally, this is not what represents Mexico at all.
Over all, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, even if you think you know Mexican food. Unless you've actually been to Mexico, you're not getting an authentic experience here and you are actually better off going...
Read moreMy fiancé brought me to Superior Bar & Grill MidCity for my 52nd birthday dinner, it's Saturday nite and the joint was slammed, the line was out the door, surprisingly it didn't take long to make it to the hostess. She asked if we would like a high top table. However, im disabled and use a cane for assistance to walk. In 2002, I had an accident and was paralyzed from the waist down...however thru physical therapy and lots of hard work, I learned how to walk again. I still have balance issues, so I use a cane, I said that to say this........ The hostess informed me that they had tables available on their patio and asked us to wait while someone cleared it off. Unknowingly, to get to the patio, there are lots of steps transitioning to different levels, which would have been difficult for me, then the night manager, Mr. Richard stepped in and informed us that he had a table close by, and it was being cleared for us as we spoke. He told us that he always makes sure anyone that is disabled gets a table as close to the entrance as possible because it is easier for customers as myself. Mr. Richard was kind and very helpful. The restaurant was packed, so he was very busy. He was running all over the restaurant, so for him to take time to stop and help me, says ALOT about his character. He's definitely an asset to this business. Also, we live two and a half hours from Baton Rouge. It was our weekend get away to celebrate my birthday, and i had a terrific time. I will come back quite often because you can't allow miles to separate you from amazing food and wonderful...
Read moreI had high hopes for Superior Grill on Government Street, but this experience left me extremely disappointed. I am fully aware that large parties (6+) are often charged an automatic gratuity, but this policy was applied unfairly during our visit. Our group included 5 adults and 1 infant. Let me repeat: an infant. The baby was obviously not eating or being served in any way. Yet, we were still treated as a party of 6 for the purposes of the gratuity charge.
When I asked about it, I was met with a lack of understanding. It felt like no one cared to listen or use common sense. Our server, Cristal, did not make any effort to address the situation or resolve it. Instead, we were essentially dismissed with a shrug, as if we didn’t matter as customers. It’s incredibly frustrating to feel penalized for bringing a baby along—a baby who had zero impact on the service.
The whole ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth, no pun intended. If Superior Grill wants to lump infants into their "party size" calculation, they should make that clear up front, or better yet, apply a little bit of logic. I would’ve gladly tipped Cristal generously if the service had been attentive or if this had been handled properly, but unfortunately, this experience was the opposite.
If you're looking for a place that values fairness and customer satisfaction, I suggest going elsewhere. Superior Grill on Government Street will not be getting my...
