I went with my family to speeds Friday evening. Huge difference between the day and night shift. Angie was a amazing waitress. Made sure are drinks were always full. Got to go boxes for our leftover food. Made the most awesomest hot chocolate and whip cream drink according to my child. She also loved the ice cream with chocolate and whip cream. Keep up the great job Angie. The Wirebaugh family.
Normally speeds is really good. There food is amazing. Normally sadly this was not the case Thursday morning.
My family and I have been going to speeds for a while. Thursday morning I took a few friends to try speeds as they have never been there.
We sat at the front table by the door as my friend is on oxygen and uses a cane. Ordered our drinks and food. Drinks were great a gentleman refilled our drinks. Our wateriness brought our food we had ordered our food without onions as it doesn't agree with us. Our food was smoothed in extra onion. We called our wateriness over explained again onions don't agree with us. She took the burgers back scrapping part of the oinion off but leaving most. So we ordered something else. We were halfway through our meal and our wateriness comes over and tells us she has another party coming in and needs that table starts taking our food and drinks and throws them away. Tells me my total. The restaurant was empty. If you want to reserve a table for certain people than maybe put a reserved sign up. So I paid the bill and went somewhere else to eat since our wateriness thru away our food. ...
Read moreThis is not the Speeds I used to visit when I was a high-schooler, late at night, after working at menial teenage jobs or going out on dates. The Speeds I most favored was on Capital Avenue Southwest. Back in those days, there was even another Speeds that opened just six blocks away, on the south side of the intersection of Capital and West Columbia. Back then, Speeds was the Starbucks of Battle Creek!
The one-time local empire was built upon the best burgers in town. My Uncle Mac, living in upstate New York and then Ohio and then Wisconsin, would proclaim his undying affection for these hometown hamburgers. The Enquirer and News would regularly publish affectionate feature stories about people who sent Speeds burgers in refrigerated mailers across country. Those were the golden years for Speeds.
Like everyone else, I loved their burgers and their basketed fries. I was partial to their cherry shakes - not strawberry, but cherry. I enjoyed eating there with my family as a kid, and I enjoyed hanging out there with my pals as a teenager.
During my last trip home, I visited this Speeds - the Urbandale Speeds - apparently, perhaps, possibly, and maybe the last Speeds standing. I found that the old magic was quite wanting. The restaurant seemed grimy and grungy. The hamburgers were merely normal burgers, nice enough perhaps, but nothing my Uncle Mac would brag about. My cherry shake, however, was just as good as...
Read moreFirst, atmosphere. We did not go inside so I gave it a 1 because I had no idea about that
The cod dinner was great, 3 pieces under ten bucks. Applesauce and hash browns were had in the side.
The person who took the call was great
Only problem I had. So if you divide the 8.25 by 3 pieces of just the fish alone..., That equals 2.75 a piece. Then that doesn't factor in potato's or applesauce.
Many places will let you ala carte extra pieces of fish. And they do. When I went there last night, I got charged 5.25 for an extra piece.
By the math, I was close to having two extra pieces and feel this was unacceptable. The fish was really good and tender. I feel it should not be that high. Ain't nobody breaking their arms throwing in two extra pieces for 5.50 and that's giving it a bit extra..
That fish was actually less per piece because of the hash browns and applesauce not being factored...
