I tried this chain for the first time today and it was a bit of a mixed bag.
The service was excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
Things start to go downhill a bit with the food. I ordered a chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, green beans and some kind of taco soup (which was devoid of fried tortilla strips, chips etc). The soup was very good flavor wise, but some nacho strips would have helped a lot as far as textures. The lack of them didn't stop me from wolfing it down in about two minutes.
The mashed potatoes were pretty good as well. You could tell they were made from actual mashed potatoes and not instant potatoes and there was a nice flavor overall.
The green beans with bacon didn't taste that great to me, but that's something I've only had once or twice before elsewhere. So I don't have much to go on experience wise.
The chicken fried steak fell flat on its face. It's honestly the only time I've almost rejected one. If I wasn't in such a hurry, I probably would have. The flavor was weird in that you could taste the grease in every bite (even though it wasn't overtly greasy). The steak didn't have much for texture and felt more like a big greasy burger patty. I didn't even need a knife to cut it, I just sliced it with my fork (and once with a spoon just for kicks). The breading was bland as well with no real flavor to it. The country gravy was okay, but a bit of salt and pepper made it much better. If it had more gravy on it maybe that would have hidden the weird greasy flavor that I was getting.
I finished off with a slice of pumpkin cheesecake since they were out of carrot cake and.honestly.I can't recommend it enough. While not was spiced, it didn't taste like a "pumpkin spiced" anything which actually has nothing to do with pumpkin. It tastes like it had some pumpkin and then some spices. $8.00 is a little steep for the price, but not by an absurd amount.
Overall I'm not against eating at a Black Bear Diner again, I'll just avoid the chicken fried steak like I do with every other diner and let the steak houses...
Read moreThe bear theme is cute. Our waitress, Tristan I think, was decent.. food came out and the hollandaise sauce was very broken. It still tasted good and I asked our waitress not to take it back but she came back after speaking to her manager and she took it anyway because the manager told her to.. so now my whole family is finished eating which is the reason I didn’t want to send it back to begin with with and it comes back out again and the sauce is still broken but not as bad.. so I just didn’t say anything this time. I finish eating and then go to put the kids left overs in a box and there’s a hair in one of their pancakes.. the cinnamon roll French toast had so much cinnamon you couldn’t taste anything else.. the hash browns were cooked in some areas and nearly raw in others and were not seasoned at all I had to add salt. burgers were good.. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re there for a burger and fries and even then id inspect everything before you eat it in case someone shed in it. I will say the Best part was the huckleberry lemonade It was absolutely delicious.
We usually enjoy our visit to BB but this visit was not enjoyable. The overnight manager who is so sweet & pleasant came to our table & we talked about how cold it was in the restaurant & she adjusted the temperature. I understand the workers may be hot because they are moving around but the manager decided to please the customers. OUR waitress makes a comment about the customers who stated it was cold & said it loud enough for us to hear. So I said that was me your manager was talking with. So she switches it up and said the customer is always right & besides I wouldn't want you to go sit outside in your truck & eat🤔🤔 NOW WHY WOULD I DO THAT🤔🤔. I responded & said no ma'am before I do that I can go eat somewhere else. Now my husband felt offended by that statement & wanted to leave. I offered to pay for the drinks that we hadn't touched but out of courtesy. The young lady at the register heard what was going on & agreed it was unprofessional. The manager she came out & apologize & had them to plate our food up & gave to us no charge. She was really upset by this because we were going there on a regular & never had any problems. We haven't been back since but because the manager is so sweet we'll make our way back. The food is plenty & delicious & usually waitress is more...
