Shugs is a must go to place in Bellevue. It's tastefully appointed with a bit of a hipster feel (those Edison light bulbs) , where the outside looks hole in the wall, but the inside is not.
You can order to go at the counter or sit down and order have full table service.
We came on a Thursday and the restaurant was full. We managed to get the last table, although they also had bar seating that was available (those are stools that are elevated)
There was a little bit of confusion for myself when I walked in because I saw the order here sign. She told us to sit at the table but it was very busy so I couldn't really understand what she was saying. Since it was so loud. I ended up ordering at the counter only to find out that they do full table service. I think it caused a bit of confusion with our service because I did that.
Service was efficient at the counter if a bit aloof in the beginning. They warmed up a 1000x by the end of service. I think they were a bit overwhelmed as the place was full.
Jalapeno garlic wings 5 stars It was served piping hot, Perfectly balanced with flavor, this garners an easy 5 star. Outside is crispy, inside is juicy The only issue was if we had waited for the server to bring us plates it would have cooled down, but we didn't, so not a problem for us.
Fried chicken 4.5 stars to 5 I'm not sure if it's just because the jalapeno garlic wings could be 5+ but it shines a bit more for me than the fried chicken. The white meat was very good (I normally avoid white meat for fried chicken, but this was something I could get into)
Blackened catfish 4 stars It was good. Not a stand out but good.
Ranking of sides on preference for what we tried Greens (served with corn bread) 5 stars Macaroni and cheese 4.5-5 stars French fries 4 stars Yams 3 stars this was personally not my thing, but my friend who is from the south loved it saying it tasted like back home. I like yams but this was too sweet for me and there was an off taste, but I think it's supposed to taste like this. I'm used to just eating yams that are baked, microwaved or boiled with nothing added.
However, the ranking actually stands because it was also still her least favorite out of the sides, but that's also because all the other sides were very good. So I'm not knocking on it, but my personal preference that was a no for me.
Parking is available on the street. I did not notice any parking...
Read moreShugs comfort food. First time trying Shugs. I heard they have been hustling plates for a while. I work in Bellevue so I frequent Swine dining and pass by Shugs. Hands down I will eat here daily if I had the money. Simple meal. 3 piece fried chicken with two sides. I chose the green beans and mac and cheese. First off I hate Mac and cheese from restaurants. It's over boiled and the cheese is broken and oily. Not the case. Nice aldente noods and simple cheese sauce. The green beans were cooked in a awesome blend of spices with cayenne pepper. Those were effing great. I should have gotten the greens because I imagine they are cooked the same way. The fried chicken was on point. Enough flavor and evenly distributed spices. The breast was juicy even when cooled down. Leg and thigh cooked perfectly. Well worth my money. Can't wait to try the catfish, greens, and few other things. 5 stars for the staff. Everyone was nice and it felt very much like I was invited over to have lunch at someone's house. Generous portions. I took it to go. They separated the chicken from the sides with parchment. Everything was better than I expected. THE NEXT DAY: I am here again this time I ordered the Catfish filet, greens, and Mac and Cheese for the second time. I'm currently awaiting my order to go. I don't have to even wonder if this is going to be good. I'll snap a pic of my current to-go order since I...
Read moreWalking in you're hit with that musty smell from being in a very old building in old downtown Bellevue. Small dining area but it wasn't packed so my family of 5 was ok. The fried chicken was very good, crispy skin and juicy meat. Mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese and red beans and rice were all delicious as well. The thing that really drove down my review score is I sat facing the kitchen right next to the service counter and noticed the cook, the young server boy and the tall older Caucasian man looking very concerningly at something in the counter behind the service window. I overheard the tall older guy ask "is it edible?" Not what you want to hear at a restaurant at all!!!! The cook looked hesitant but they sent the food out anyway and guess what, it was our chicken gizzards, ugh! Not sure if they were old or what but they were horrible. I wanted to complain and report what I witnessed and overheard but my wife insisted I don't make a scene so we just sent them back. Overall food was good, restaurant needs cleaned, waitress was kind and attentive. I probably will not go back but wouldn't either recommend it nor tell anyone to avoid it, I'll let you come to your own...
