Typically Scottys is pretty good overall, but my last visit was a huge exception. This was back in around Nov 2017 and I haven't been back since. I ordered a burger and fries, pretty simple dish. The burger that was brought out was a little too bloody for my taste (blood oozing on the plate). Honest mistake, no big deal. The server took so long to come check our orders, I started eating the fries and got through about 2/3 of them. She finally came, and I very politely asked if it could be cooked a little more. At this point she showed a bit of attitude, but nothing out of the ordinary. My wife and I thought, "I wouldn't want to piss her off" and just laughed to ourselves.
While waiting, my family had finished their meal. After about 10 mins, she brings the burger back on a small plate by itself. I then asked the server, "doesn't this come with any fries?" as there was still some left from before. She replies "you ate all your fries" and walks away. Firstly, if I had eaten all my fries (which I hadn't), would it be that hard to throw a little more on the side so I'm not just sitting there eating a burger by itself? At this point I start to see her true colors. I turn around, and she's kibitzing with her other coworkers, and they're all looking back at us like I did something wrong.
At this point I'm pissed, I call over the manager to tell him the situation. He apologizes, I could almost tell by his reaction that it wasn't the first time this server had a complaint against her, and he then gives me a glass of wine to compensate. I thought that was a little cheap too as I thought the burger itself would have at least been taken care of, but I wasn't going to argue with him as then I look like the difficult customer.
Anyways, for a restaurant this calibre I expected better. I get things don't always go right in the kitchen, but there's no room for any sort of attitude from a server, especially when unprovoked. I should've left a complaint at the time but never did, and I should've also left this...
Read moreGreat service, decent food and cocktails. We go here from time to times because my wife does Barre classes next door.
The staff is always top notch. Someone trained them well.
Although the cocktail menu is sort of frilly for my tastes with Bellini slushes and things of that sort, the bartenders can do the classics and they carry good spirits. My Woodford Manhattan was very good.
To be honest, we generally stick to small plates so we can have a variety of tastes. Sort of a tapas way of doing things. This time, the lettuce wraps and tempura cauliflower were good. The sweet potato fries were soggy.
If I had one complaint, it would be the pricing. With burgers coming in at $20 and all the bowls being north of $20, the costs are just short of outrageous.
I know there is inflation, but also believe there is a bit of “greedflation” going on. That said, Scotty Brown’s has always been pricey for what they serve. The owners know that with a couple of lesser exceptions they are the only place of its kind north of the 5 in Bham. Their location has ample parking and seating, which is not the case with similar places downtown. Because of this, Scotty’s can charge what they do because people keep coming.
We got out the door for a bit over $100 for three cocktails and three ordinary type apps, one of which was a small order of fries. Pretty steep in my estimation. Steep enough that Scotty Brown’s will stay on our “occasional” schedule of every two or three months instead of us being regulars.
It is not that we don’t have the money….it is just that we do not want to keep feeding the inflation/greedflation beast. Once folks either cut back or stop their visits to places charging higher prices for average fare, restaurants will either drop prices or...
Read moreWalked in for dinner with another couple we're friends with to celebrate some wonderful news we received, each of us with a child, and we were informed that we could not be accommodated. Flabbergasted at the idea that a party of six was too much regardless of our willingness to wait, I asked what options we had. The gal told us we could split into two different tables. That obviously wouldn't make any sense to do. I eventually suggested we could all fit into one booth, which easily worked. Shortly after being seated, my wife went to the restroom to change our newborn's diaper, and found the bathroom completely lacked a changing table. Her only option was to change our son's diaper on the bathroom floor! I'm pretty appalled at that. If they don't want families with well-behaved children patronizing their business, just post it on the front door and save people time. Another issue we had is that the space for a guest to sit and eat their meal is not large enough. Two of the people in our party - neither of whom I would classify as obese - mentioned it made it uncomfortable as the edge of the table was right up against their stomach. Never been to a restaurant with sitting room that is that tight. My last issue with our dining experience tonight is that we could hardly track down our waitress to get any refills on any of our drinks. Not impressed. Decent food but wicked expensive for what you get, and they clearly don't value families patronizing their business, so we'll save them the hassle...
