Comal was a good upscale mexican restaurant. I really enjoyed the al pastor taco, the ensalada dish, and the flan. The service was really great too. Our waitress was very attentive and accommodating. I ordered the Comel Swizzle drink with tequila. It was okay, a little smoky, which is why I wanted it with tequila instead of mezcal, but it still tasted smoky. The salad was really good. It wasn't overly dressed, and it made me like beets (which I typically don't). The dressing was a cilantro lime type sauce. Definitely recommend getting that. I also got the al pastor taco and the rock cod taco. The al pastor was so good. The pork was very flavorful and there was pineapple bits ontop that made it a salty sweet type of taco. The rock cod wasn't as great. The fish didnt taste very fresh (it tasted too fishy) and the slaw broke down to mush because of the sauce. Wouldn't get that again. We also had the ribs, greens, rice and beans, chicken tamale, and chicken enchilada. The ribs were okay. Definitely not a 'standard' bbq rib but it was a good flavor. It seems like they were boiled and then baked maybe. For dessert we had the flan and the chocolate mousse. The flan was so good, creamy, and sitting in a thin caramel sauce. I've never enjoyed flan until I ate it here. The chocolate mousse was a dark chocolate, but the cream ontop offset the bitterness. The cream had salt in it which made everything sweeter. That cream was amazing. I would definitely back and probably get that al pastor taco again and maybe try the chicken one too.

I wanted to love this place. I really did. I mean, it’s a recommended Bib Gourmand after all! However, my honest review is that it tastes like Mexican food made by someone who has.. never had Mexican food before 😭 for a $15 taco, I expected something flavorful and high in quality, but instead I got a plate of food that tasted like a few too many Karens complained it was “too spicy” to the point that the chef gave up on seasoning altogether. I’m 100% convinced the slaw on top of the fish tacos was just cabbage, mayonnaise, and some salt — even a bit of lemon juice or vinegar would’ve added more dimension to an otherwise flat flavor profile. The carne asada tacos were topped with cooked cactus, which added a lot of volume but not a lot of flavor. For as disappointing as the tacos were, the guacamole was DELICIOUS, creamy and tart in all the right ways. The tortilla chips were clearly made in-house (which I really liked), although you had to be careful to avoid getting one that gushed oil when you bite into it. A bit thinner and they would’ve been perfect. My dining partner had the shrimp ceviche, which they really liked (I didn’t try any). The cocktails were refreshing and very high quality. My favorite part of the dining experience was the atmosphere — it had an industrial-chic ambience with lots of black metal, dark wood, and exposed concrete. It was also surprisingly spacious, with lots of dining space deep into the back of the restaurant, paired with soaring ceilings and exposed beams (if you’re pressed for a place that can accommodate a large group, this space is up to the task!) I would come again for a cocktail before a show or a nightcap after dinner somewhere else in downtown Berkeley. Our server was very kind and attentive and made sure we had our food in time to wrap up and make our concert. Overall, I didn’t HATE it, but I expected a lot more for Mexican food in California (especially one with these price tags! 🤑).

We went to this Mexican restaurant in downtown Berkeley for dinner on July 4. This is casual fine dining place. They have a good deletion of cocktails, alcoholic beverages and good vegetarian options for food. We ordered the paper umbrella, juaqin murietta and the Jack satan cocktails. For mains we ordered the mushroom quesadilla, Tlyuda( flatbread with squash, smashed garbanzo paste, squash blossom and a pesto on top, just similar to a pizza). My friends ordered the tamales ( non veg option), barbacoa taco and the pork enchiladas for entrees. The Coca-Cola are really good. The tlayuda flatbread dish was good and huge portion ( easily shared by two). The quesadilla was rich and heavy. The order entrees portion size was good for one person. My friends loved the barbacoa and the enchillada. The tamales was decent/average. One thing to note is that even though the tamales may seem to have veggie options, the masa used to make the tamales has lard or animal fat. So in essence none the tamales is veggie. This is not mentioned on the menu and I by chance got to know before ordering with the waiter staff. Overall the ambience and the setting is really good and it was a pleasant experience with dishes not commonly seen in other Mexican restaurants in Bay Area.

My friend recommended this restaurant to me, but I was disappointed by three things. First, when 95% of the seats were empty, the hostess gave us possibly the worst table in the restaurant right next to the restroom . When I asked for an outdoor seat, instead of giving us a full solid table for 4, of which all were empty, she seats us at a 2 person table and pushes an adjacent 2 person table together to accommodate our reservation for 3- the tables were not level with each other and did not match up- resulting in frequent awkwardness . Why not give us a one piece solid table for 4? They were all available . Second, I ordered a Diet Coke- $ 5 for a small glass- ok I guess, I asked for a refill- they charged me another $5 for another small glass! So, I had paid $ 10 for probably 1/2 can of Diet Coke!Third, I was not informed a 20% service charge is directly charged. Fortunately, I looked at the bill when I doubted the price, and realized there was already a 20 percent tip on the bill. If I had not noticed, we would have given a 40 percent tip! On a positive note, the service was very good and the food delicious.

We ate dinner here at the beginning of November. I had the fish tacos and the wifey had the chicken tamales. We started with the guacamole appetizer with chips. I love the chips, they're thick and crispy but my wifey thought that they were too greasy. What does she know? ;-) They bring a tray of three different sizes for the chips. Two of them are very good but I think the third one (the dark red one I think) might be able to help start the Berkeley fusion reactor. It is SPICY! My fish tacos were fantastico! I thought the chicken tamales were good but the wife he thought they were a little bit too spicy. :-( On the atmosphere side, I'd advise you to try and get seats away from the outside seating as far as possible. There's a constant cold wind from the outside; the waiters leave the doors open because they go through so often. Obviously this is mainly an issue during winter. Be prepared to leave some time to park. Parking in downtown Berkeley can be a chore. All in all I have to say that we love this place and we'll be back again.
