Name is a bit confusing and misleading; expected a pub/bar with food that was appropriate (and a wall of beer taps). Instead I encountered Indian food, drink coolers full of cans/bottles - no taps, and stale pizza served by unfriendly counter staff. I was not offered a freshly poured beer, just making that clear - the less than helpful man behind the counter merely pointed to the wall of drink coolers and asked if I wanted a drink with my food.
I'm a very patient / relaxed guy, but don't come here for ale or a bar/pub kind of visit. The name makes absolutely no sense for what they serve (shame on me for not reviewing their menu/website beforehand?) There's no pub food, no burgers, no steaks, no baked potatoes. Or fresh pizza; they won't offer to customize it - just reheat what's left over. I wanted a few slices of pieces and the gruff pointing to what was still on the counter is all I got (in addition to the "We don't have that" when I tried selecting other toppings).
I saw 1 other person come in for food. 8-10 folks came in just for beer and drinks in the coolers.
The pizza was fine, definitely not super awesome and not the flavors I wanted, though my story about dinner in Berkeley had more going on. Clearly I should have chosen a different spot...
Read moreAte at Barbarian last night, and both my partner and I woke up with hang over like symptoms, despite not having a drop of alcohol. He got the Vegetable Korma and saag paneer, I got the veggie masala and saag paneer and shared a samosa. Saag was flavorless and seemed as if they put frozen spinach and cream in a blender then heated it up. The korma was the best tasting of the curries, but that is not saying much. Everything is served in plastic despite eating in. We were both very hungry and ate a majority of it, but not even my partner finished his plate which is not normal. Both of us felt a bit off last night after. I felt a wee nauseous and both of us had that digestive feeling after where your body is cursing you for putting it through this digestive task. Not sure if ownership changed, but it wasn’t always like this and something went terribly wrong here. PS, we saw the pizzas looking haggard and sad as can be dried out in the open. I definitely don’t trust their food...
Read moreI've been a regular at this bar, as well as at East Bay Spice Company. I was quite disheartened to see a negative review from Shay that criticized the bartender, who I believe did nothing wrong.
To provide some context, I’m a Black male who was having a great time with a friend, and I was using the N-word quite loudly throughout the night. The bartender asked me to tone it down, but I didn't. Later, when a young lady asked where is the restroom, he jokingly asked "do you know the password." Whether that was the most appropriate joke is debatable. However, I recognize that my loud use of the word may have contributed to the misunderstanding.
I've known this bartender for over two years, since my junior year in college, and I specifically go to the bar on the days he works. I want to apologize for any misunderstanding or discomfort caused to the young lady. And hopefully clarify...
