Tupper & Reed — Restaurant in Berkeley

This is my favorite bar in Berkeley. I’m a transfer student at UC Berkeley from LA. I’m much older than the average student. I’ve been to many bars around campus and didn’t feel welcome. One day I met a friend at a different cocktail bar around the corner, but the staff asked us to move off the bar so that a group of white folks that walked in after us could sit together. We decided to leave and Google recommended Tupper & Reed. I was preparing for the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was incredibly nice. The cocktail program is outstanding. The atmosphere is swanky but not pretentious. You can ask any bartender for most classic cocktails and they’ll deliver excellence. Better than average Negroni, thanks to the decent vermouth, but for $16, which I consider steep, I it should be exceptional/at least made with a decent gin. Beer is listed on the menu at $8 but, even paying cash, bartender charges $9 due to tax -- mathematically this doesn't make sense, it's tacky, and I don't know any other foodless bar that does this. It made me suspicious of the bartender, fairly or not.

There was once a nice, relaxed, borderline alternative feel to the place but now they pump it full of douchehaus musak and I suspect that one needs to be both wealthy and full of wealthy person drugs to enjoy oneself here. My boyfriend and I stopped here for a drink after having dinner in SF. We were looking for a bar that had a mellow atmosphere with GOOD service. The patrons there were fine, HOWEVER, the service was mediocre. The bartenders do not greet you when you walk up to the bar and when we were finally acknowledged I asked for a Long Island Iced Tea. The bartender snarled and rudely informed me, with arrogance "This is a cocktail only bar" so I apologized and proceeded to order a Jack and diet coke and he rudely responded "I guess I can make that for you".
