I don't hate calypso cafe. But I feel like they hate vegetarians. Multiple times I have asked to get a veggie burger patty on top of the black bean salad as oppose to meat or rice. They refuse to do this, even when I'm willing to pay. Today I was starving and craving this salad. The east Nashville location (the nicest of the locations) always substitutes a veggie patty for me. I know the franchises are owned by different owners. That's not an excuse for bad ownership. Today when I again pleaded for the 100 oaks location to please let me put a patty on top of my black bean salad, they refused. I told them I was more than happy to pay the dollar or whatever the sub charge would be. They told me I would have to buy a "veggie burger sandwhich" at the usual price but they would discount the .95 for no bread or any fixings. I asked how much that would cost. They told me I would have to pay $7 on top of the $9 or so dollars that the black bean salad cost. Look, as a vegetarian, I just want a protein rich meal. I don't want two helpings of black canned beans--which is 100 oaks calypso's only solution for me not wanting rice or chicken on the black bean salad. There is no way a veggie patty can have such a gross overhead that there has to be a $7 charge just to put it on top of a salad. I would welcome the owner of the company to respond to this review, and allow me some insight on why I can't pay, say a dollar or even two, in order to make such a beautiful meal happen. I mean, it's not that I don't like your food. It's that I think it's a little ridiculous to tout yourself as a vegetarian friendly establishment. I won't be back at the 100 oaks restaurant. I feel like if the owner is that strict and pompous, then it's no place I want to be. East Nashville calypso, no worries. Y'all are the sweetest. Thank god I live on your side of town. To bad I work by 100 oaks. Also, this review does not reflect service or mgmt of 100 oaks. They do a steady job. Just give me a veggie burger on my Black bean...
Read moreCouva Calypso or The Calypso Café @ 100 Oaks was a surprisingly nice experience. It's an trendy, Central American/Carribean island-esque themed restaurant with an emphasis on healthy, vegetarian, and vegan meals at an affordable price point. Now when I said "themed", I don't mean like the Rainforest Cafe or Aquarium Restaurant in the Opry Mills Mall; there aren't any pictures of Castro shaking Che Guevara's hand nor any "props" of beached derelict row boats but they do play some interesting music. The music sounded a lot like some "Musica Latina", Dancehall, and possibly some classic Kingston Reggae...but the atmosphere isn't the most important thing here, it's of course...the food. The food is so good here. The menu is easy to read with "V" marking vegan and/or vegetarian entrées and their website backs up these claims of a healthy menu; using "buzz words" like "low carbs, Trans-Fat, and no MSG or Gluten" and I have to say that I'm convinced that most of their food isn't processed with preservatives. I had an all white meat Half-Chicken "Rotisseried" with Jamaican Curry seasoning (which was like an apple sauce with onions and spices), Boija Muffins, and a Mug of Soup. My wife had a similar dish and we also had the Cuban Black Bean Dip as an appetizer...it ALL was good...and that damn Fruit Tea "you must try this"!!! This place is definitely "a happening scene" for the hipster crowd but when night fell, all types of people came to eat there so no one should feel uncomfortable going here.My only dislikes were the tortilla chips (they just seemed too cheap) and the chairs were a little stiff (I'm a big man so I like to have room to be comfortable). While I can't say for sure about the other locations, I recommend this one at 100 Oaks and I look forward to trying something else on the menu next time we are shopping in the area. Maybe I'll try...
Read moreI have been coming to Calypso cafes lacrosse Nashville since 2004. When my father was still alive it was at least a weekly thing, back in the days that they had locations near elliston Street and all the way out Belle Mead. I'll probably go now. The food has always been comforting, high quality and value. I always forget to take photos before I completely devour my plate I can take a picture of fruit tea but doesn't do it justice it is however really good meant to be served with ice. If you're out near hundred oaks Mall which is no longer a mall or around the nolensville road Thompson Lane area this place is an excellent choice. If you take a look at the online menu usually they're really busy but I came in on the day that it was half busy let the waitress know I knew what I wanted sat down ordered my quarter dark with my two sides muffins and sweet potatoes and a fruit tea. I mentioned it was busy, got that tea within a minute and got that food within five. They may get backed up the workers are always going around cleaning stuff they got a good team there. If you're visiting Nashville this place should be on your list. Okay since the pandemic they've only had one location open and it said very limited hours; however, if you look on their website very soon they're expecting the open up a Charlotte Pike location as well as extended hours for Thompson Lane. There's no alcohol served and it's nearly a community institution call it a local gem so if you stop by don't ruin it! Truthfully if you're visiting Nashville this should absolutely be on your list (sometimes it's good to repeat yourself to make sure people were listening) at the moment they're only open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and they still do a banging business. Look at that menu...
