Yaki Texas Teriyaki Filed under: Skittles in a Box

You know when a meal just hits—not like a heavy punch, but like a rhythm section. Smooth. Pacing. Flavors that build a groove. That was the Combo Box at Yaki.

Started with a chilled Topo Chico, frosted up and snapping crisp on the lips. That thing’s not a drink—it’s a reset button. Sparkled your tongue and cleared the stage.

Then came the box. Little brown cube of mystery. Popped the top, and there it was: slaw like confetti, creamy and punchy—each crunch like a cymbal crash. You could feel the spicy mayo and chili oil doing their work—not loud, but layered. The mushrooms and slaw together? Man, it was like funk and jazz colliding—unexpected harmony.

The smoked chicken didn’t just sit there either—it floated, swirled, dipped into the sauces like it knew the choreography. Grabbed a chunk of broccoli like it was a green flag waving “you’re almost there.” And then you hit that warm rice at the bottom—like the bassline dropped in after the buildup. Deep, grounding, perfectly timed.

I ate outside, on a weathered bench. No fancy signage. Just a colorful shack, Texas breeze, and some mystery behind that plastic-curtain slit like a magician’s tent. What are they cooking back there? You don’t know. But you trust it. You trust them.

And that—that—is the funny part. We’ll trust the box. Trust the hands behind the curtain. But not the Voice inside that says:

“You are safe. You are held. You are whole. I am with you always.”

Isn’t that wild?

Final Verdict: Yaki’s Combo Box isn’t just food—it’s a lesson in trust, a melody of flavor, and a reminder that what’s hidden doesn’t have to be feared.

We love Yaki!! In addition to going to their drive-in, which serves delicious food and has such a fun vibe, we hired them to cater our Waco-area wedding. If you're planning a wedding, this is the way to go!

We were able to get ahold of the owner, Jake, via email, to receive a quote and place our order. We received so many compliments from our guests. The cost per head was much lower than traditional catering, the food was amazing, and with pre-packaged boxes, it was easy to quickly serve our many guests. Yaki is already dairy, gluten, and nut free, so accommodating our guests' dietary restrictions was easy. Jake also worked with us to add custom stickers that were co-branded with Yaki and our new last name, just for our wedding, at an additional cost. They were the perfect touch. We are so glad that it worked out to have Yaki at our wedding, and we would highly recommend them to anyone else...

My husband and I absolutely loved out visit here. We were in town for the weekend and needed a quick bite to eat. I have several food intolerances and am non celiac gluten sensitivitie, so finding food while out and about can be hard. This place was able to help with that as they are gluten free and very accommodating with any other food issues you may have. I had the smoked chicken box (which was rice, then smoked chicken on top of that and then a layer of slaw. My husband had the brisket box.(rice layer then brisket and pickles on top of that, then a layer of slaw) Both were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The customer service was spot on. The only thing we were sad about it there isn't one in the town where we live. So next time we make our way back up to waco, this place will definitely be on our list of...

Man. Where do I start? I don't know why it took me so long to go here. If you see Yaki driving down Valley Mills almost everyday and think "that place looks sick" then that means you should GO!! I am so happy I am now a "Yakioan" (mix between Wacoan & Yaki). I am originally from Malibu, CA so I take good food serious. For me, it is tough to feel good after eating out sometimes. Let's just say the box filled with rice, slaw, and chicken or your choice of meat will leave you wanting MORE. (Even after being full) Wow, the service is amazing. You can order ahead from work or home. Or scan the QR code at the drive in and they will walk your food out. Recommendations: ALL This place gives "eat here vibes"

I had the smoked salmon box yesterday at a rowing regatta! CAN I SAY ... MAGICAL! 😍😍😍 THE SMOKE SALMON WAS VERY WELL COOKED (but not over cooked) AND FULL OF SMOKE FLAVOR! OMG! 🤤🤤 I think you chose an excellent choice in wood! I appreciated the crunch that came with the Cabbage as well! Great texture! The rice was perfectly cooked as well... I am from Dallas Texas but I will definitely have to make a trip to Waco for another box! Lovely customer service as well!
