I had ordered cupcakes a week in advance for Christmas. The lady took my order on the phone and then sent me an invoice by email. I paid that invoice within 6 minutes of getting the email (I checked time stamps). I called Thursday because of the weather and asked about picking them up Saturday instead of Friday. The lady that answered the phone was rude from the start in answering my questions. Finally she asked my name so she could note the change and then proceeded to tell me my order wasnât even paid for. I explained that they invoiced me twice and I paid the first one that was sent. She checked something again and then claimed she found it. Then she says âI have to call the owner to see if we can even do this.â Seriously?!? I say to her âReally? I paid in under 10 minutes why would you not be able to? Itâs not my fault you missed that.â Then she goes âI canât do anything for you.â Really?!? I just stayed silent and then she said she would call me back after speaking to the owner. Iâve never been spoken to so rudely by a business that made such a blatant mistake and then acted like it was my fault or an inconvenience because I still wanted what I paid $100 for. She called me back 15 minutes later and said âWe can still do them for Saturday (my original pick up was Friday they are lucky I wouldnât be able to make the 30 minute drive on Friday) but youâll have to come by noon because we close early that day.â Thatâs it. No sorry. No apology for the mistake. Nothing. Not one ounce of anything but pure rudeness. THEN when I get the cupcakes (picked up by my sister and brought to my house) they tasted like two day old cupcakes they must of scraped the old frosting off of and put new on. I know they do that because they made my sons high school graduation cupcakes and did that to fix their mistake (wrong color frosting) then. I had to wait 15 minutes on a day I was already swamped while they fixed it. The graduation cupcakes tasted perfectly fine. The ones I just got were not fresh cupcakes. IF they were they were cooked to long but I think they were just old ones. Iâm just disgusted by the whole thing and itâs left a bad taste in my mouth. I havenât decided if Iâll...
Read moreI initially thought I would be interested in this place for its bars or pies, but the cupcakes ended up stealing my heart! All of them looked classy and delicious, but I had one important question to ask - "Do any of these have a filling?" Thank goodness, the answer was yes! When it comes to cupcakes, I'm not paying for it if it doesn't have a filling. Here at Sugar Mama's I had four filled options! My husband and I decided we should get all four in mini size to share - Snowball, Turtle, Peanut Butter Cup and S'more.
Across the board, all four cupcakes were of consistently good quality. The cake was light and fluffy and the icings/filling had a lot of flavor without being overly sweet. The S'more was probably the simplest of the four we tried - a chocolate cake with a graham cracker crust, marshmallow filling, dipped in a chocolate glaze and a mini marshmallow on top! The crunch of the hardened glaze went nicely with the pillowy soft cake, but the flavors weren't overwhelmingly interesting. The Turtle was a chocolate cake with caramel filling and a caramel buttercream. The caramel buttercream had a beautifully bright flavor, but there was very little chocolate flavor to go with it. The snowball was a coconut cake filled with coconut cream, topped with coconut buttercream and sprinkled with shredded coconut. This was definitely my second favorite! It wasn't heavy on the coconut flavor, but it had the perfect amount of sweetness. It tasted like the perfect example of an all-around, basic cupcake. Lastly, my favorite - the Peanut Butter Cup! Chocolate cake, peanut butter filling, topped with Peanut Butter Buttercream swirled with Dark Chocolate Buttercream and a Reese's Cup. The awesomeness seems pretty self-explanatory - the sweet chocolate balance with the salty peanut butter equaled super yummy. Even now I'm wondering if I should go back tomorrow and buy another. But this time I would get a full-sized...
Read moreI ordered 240 mini cupcakes from Sugar Mama for my wedding ($609.32 total), but they were never delivered. Despite multiple attempts to contact the owner the day of (Sunday), I didnât hear back until 4 hours later when she said she had been in a car accident.
I absolutely get it; things happen. What matters most is that she was safe. I would never fault a business owner for an emergency or bad luck.
While I empathize with emergencies, the situation was handled poorly. There was no backup plan and no timely communication. She promised a refund, but was unable to refund the money directly to the card on file, saying she would mail a check a few days later. We asked for a quicker resolution and offered to pick it up in person.
When we picked up the check, it was short by $9.32, and no apology or gesture was offered in person.
At bare minimum, I would have expected a check for the full amount. If we had received that, I would not have written this review.
Ideally, we would have also been met by the owner (who Iâm fairly certain was in the back, based on interactions in the bakery). If that wasnât possible, a note of thanks or apology would have been a nice substitute.
If it were me, I would have been there in person, provided the whole check, and sent the person off with some cupcakes or something as a gesture of good will.
Sugar Mama makes great cupcakes, but the lack of professionalism and follow-through during such an important event was deeply disappointing. I wouldnât recommend them for events.
Go with a more reliable local vendor like Pollen & Pastry or The Flower CafĂ©. (Heck, even Hy-Veeâwho came through with cupcakes for $500 less when we had to run there when Sugar Mama didnât deliver. Huge...
